Background is blending with drawing

So whenever I use a blending type tool on my drawings. The white background is blending with it which messes up my drawings. I can't seem to figure out how to get the background to stop blending in but haven't found out how to yet.

I think it is something like that and it is annoying.

Like I'm using black and in the next stroke, the white color just blended in. I just wanted to blend the black with the grey for the clothing. ) 😞 Can anyone please tell me how to solve this problem? Thank you very much.
