Will not launch

My screencast for months now will not launch. The icon will appear in the lower right task bar, but will disappear when my cursor hovers over it. I cannot launch the program from within Revit, nor in AutoCAD. I have searched through other posts here and the only solution that I could find was to uninstall the program, go to the registry and delete Screencast folder from "HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Autodesk". I did that and it gives me the same results. These problems still exist even with the updated v2.3. You guys have any other ideas on how to fix this?

Hi MatthewTino,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with launching Screencast. I was going to suggest cleaning up the registry and try again, but looks like you already went through that step.

Instead of updating, have you tried uninstalling the current version and then re-install the new V2.3? Also I would suggest a reboot of machine before you try anything, so that no resources are being held up.

If for some reason, if the uninstall doesn't delete the following directories, go ahead and delete the following directories:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\Chronicle

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\Autodesk Chronicle.bundle

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Chronicle

Also as you saw in the forums, deleting Screencast Key from the HKCU\Software\Autodesk, which you seem to have already done.

Can you also please logout of Autodesk Account from Revit and log back in, before you try invoking the Screencast?

If none of the above works, do you want to share, what type of machine you have. Was it working before and suddenly stopped launching? We install the Visual Studio 2012 redistributable package. Was that uninstalled somehow? We will have to investigate more.

Thanks,

--Ram

I just tried all of your suggestions above and none of them worked. It still behaves just as it did before. However, I'm not sure how to check for the visual studio. How would I find out if that is installed or not? Screencast has never worked on this machine and I have had it for about 5 months. It works fine on my other computer though and I have no idea why. I would like to see if we can narrow it down to a software or hardware issue.

My system specs are as follows:

Lenovo P500

Windows 10 Pro

Intel Xeon processor E5-1620 @3.5GHz

32 GB RAM

64 bit system

Main drive - Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB

Secondary HDD - 1TB

Hi,

Can you go to your Windows Explorer and type in %Temp% in folders edit box (this should go to your C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\Temp) and look for Screencast.dump and email that to me at this address: autodesk.screencast.alerts@autodesk.com. This may give me some clues on where the problem is.

Thanks,

I am sorry I haven't responded to this. I did not get a notification that someone had replied. I just sent you the email with the requested dmp file. Thanks!

We have the same problem as Matthewtino.

Screencast worked fine last week, now we want to use it again and it doesn't start at all.

We did already uninstal and instal the screencast software.

I also looked in the %temp% folder but there was no file related to screencast.

Hi S. Kievit,

Sorry to hear you are having the same issue as MatthewTino. Unfortunately, we are not able to repro the same situation here. MatthewTino, sent me the Screencast.dmp file. I am in the process of looking at that one to discern some information.

BTW, did you install any new software recently, that also installed the Visual Studio 2012 redsitributable package? That is just a hunch I have. In any case, I was going to suggest, uninstall with the steps that I sent MatthewTino (earlier in this forum thread), clean reboot and then reinstall Screencast and give it a try.

Also if you are logged into Autodesk account, please logout and try logging again. In the meantime tomorrow, I am going to look at the dmp file and see, if that gives me any clues.

Thanks,

--Ram

Well after having random issues in Revit and AutoCAD, we decided to go ahead and reinstall windows 10 from scratch. For whatever reason, this has actually resolved all of the issues. Wish I could be more help to those who still have this issue, but a reinstall of the OS was the trick for us (though not a preferred one obviously).

My Screencast died today as well.

History:

1) Windows updated yesterday with a forced reboot while I was away. A review of what was installed showed a Visual Studio update, a security patch, 3 general patches, and several C++ updates.

2) Post-update, the system was exhibiting strange behavior - dialog boxes and pop-up windows would be very sluggish to render (including Screencast's). Things like the task bar took 20+ seconds to show running apps.

  • Removed updates - No joy
  • Re-installed graphics driver - No joy
  • Disabled Cortana - No joy
  • Disabled context menu add-ins - No joy
  • Inspected Windows binaries for missing/corrupt files - No joy
  • Changed page file size (increased) - JOY! The rendering/lagging issue appeared to go away!

3) Began trying a new Screencast - except it won't launch

4) Tried uninstalling and deleting directories - No joy

5) Tried an older version I had laying around - No joy

6) Attempted to find log file - No joy

I'm out of my usual tools now. As an EE, I use Screencast every day... this is not good. I don't have the luxury of a fresh rebuild either.

Thoughts?

Hi,

Sorry to hear you are having issues with your system and also with Screencast. Looks like you pretty much did everything. Anyways, I would suggest these steps:

-Reboot the system

-Uninstall the Screencast Recorder

-Re-install the Screencast Recorder (the latest version 2.3)

- Reboot the system

and try invoking the Screencast Recorder

Hope this helps!!!

For anyone still having this issue:

I just ran into this.  Tried uninstalling and reinstalling like 5 times.  Same scenario, it worked and then it didn't.  No warning or explanation.  Event viewer logs had errors but shed no light as to the cause.

After looking into my profile on Autodesk, I noticed that the last two videos I had produced never showed up.  I uninstalled Screencast again, and then did a search on the laptop for "chronicle".  What showed up, among other things, were two folders under My Documents for Screencast... containing parts of those two missing videos, including the audio tracks and some screenshots.  They must have gotten corrupted somehow and were preventing Screencast from continuing.

I deleted these folders, and everything else that showed up in the search results, and reinstalled again.  This time it worked.  Maybe this will help someone else, if this happens again.

Hi,

to relaunch Screencast

  1. Unistall Screencast
  2.  in widows explorer, search Chronicle and delete all files
  3. Run>>> Regedit>>>   HKEY-current user>> software>> delete screencast
  4. reboot and reinstall screencast

July 2022 i am now having the same problem. Screencast was working albeit the menu panel is so tiny and doesn't go to full screen so you can see it,  side issue,  but now won't launch. When you click the shortcut or the icon on the task bar it looks like it will open but never does!
