Currently the 'correct' way to check dimensions involves using dimension lines. These are very buggy and often end up in the incorrect place, are illegible or cannot be clicked on to remove. As a work around, in our office, we tend to draw a bar between the two points we wish to measure between and the length of the bar pops up ain the bottom right hand corner. You then need to remember to delete the bar so it doesn't become part of your model.
It would be fantastic if a simple measuring tool was available (similar to AutoCAD) to allow quick and easy checking of dimensions.
