Portal frame with compound columns & historical sections

Hi,

I am doing a design check to an existing portal frame. The sizes along the column height differ. The columns are compound of two UK historical sections connected with a full height plate welded on their flanges both sides.

A few questions:

1. Does Robot's database contain all UK historical sections (as in the Historical Structural Steelwork Handbook)?

2. What is the best way to model the sections?

3. Is there a difference between creating a compound section and creating the section from scratch?

thanks

Hi @Anonymous

No, it doesn't.

2. What is the best way to model the sections?

I'd use the Section Builder module or edit one of the existing databases (depending on the exact section shapes).

3. Is there a difference between creating a compound section and creating the section from scratch?

Unless you want to design them as multi leg columns connected with battens or diagonals (available for selected steel codes) there isn't.
