Trying to stop the background calculations progress

Hello Everyone,

I am working in a Structural Revit and have some foundations, Beams, Channels, Bolts and nuts. During my work I tried to save, or another command like "Save, Save As, Copy, Move, and so", but it tells me you can not because there is background calculations are in progress. I don't have any calculations as shown in the below pictures.

Can anyone help me for that? I don't to close the project and start again from the beginning.

My Best Regards,

Mustafa Al-Obaidi

I found the same issue with a model that had subconnections. This error appeared when I tried to drag the end of a structural framing element that had to "touch" the elements that were involved in the subconnection without getting involved with that subconnection. When the element I dragged reached the subconnection area of affectation, that element was automatically joined with the elements of the subconnection, and that's the precise step in which I think the error appeared, since the element was not part of the subconnection but somehow revit was trying to make it become part of it and trying to update the joint with that new element involved. What I believe is that then the program entered in a loop where it was trying to constantly update a join, then realizing the element was not part of it and by repeating that process all the time the program could not finish updating the subconnection. So, to solve it, I tried to "disallow join" the element that was not part of the subconnection and, by using commands like move, align and rotate, I managed to put the element in position without the error being produced.

At least thats how it worked for me. Just a student here, I hope someone please solve this propperly, thanks and best regards.

Opening blank file worked for me!!!! This needs resolved ASAP. Very frustrating and only occurs at the most previous of times (printing, saving/leaving).

I faced this issue several times and always when using the steel product in Revit. On top of all the suggestions in this post i also find helpful making sure to use families of the same year version of the content catalog. Ie Revit 2024 with families 2024, avoid if possible to upgrade projects/families from previous versions

All the mumbo jumbo on here and the rest of the google search engine. Nothing said on here or elsewhere worked for me, but after trying many different things I found it. It's so easy it's painful.  I left my project open for 3 days because I had so much work in it, I didn't want to lose it. And yes, normally it's from using the steel plate feature that causes the backround calculations thing. On the bottom toolbar, all the way to the right, next to the underlay and pinned items tools you'll see a little circle rotating, left click on that and press the X that appears next to where it says calculating. You might have to press it a hundred times to eliminate all the calculations but keep going until all the calculations are all gone..

New file? When you have 20 plus hours on a project you can't just open a new file. It's way easier to just click on the revolving circle bottom left and X out all the calculations.

Hi, I think when they are saying open a new file, they are saying open a new file without closing the one you are working on, that cancels all the calculations in the file you are working on then go back and save, hope it works

Plate issue.  Undo until a particular plate was modelled and Revit didn't like.

If all else fails, go into task manager > background processes and end the Revit background process by right clicking. It will "fail" the calculation and you have the option to report a bug, but if you just close the small dialog box it will let you save, print, etc. again.
