when I add steel connection to a portal frame the sizes of girder and column turned smaller. I was wondering what wrong did I do and how to prevent sizes of elements to change.

Hi

What family of columns and beams you use?

Are you using "certified" families?

http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2017/ENU/?guid=GUID-6244E741-5D14-4DAD-AE25-5069F71B69F3

Structural connections can be placed only on new structural framing families.

If you used certified families, have you been editing those families?

http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2017/ENU/?guid=GUID-8381A08F-CBCD-4215-AB36-82648C07B8F6

Any geometrical modification of the certified content will be overwritten by the standard value, when a steel connection is placed.

I did make some modifications to the sections and this is probably the reason for the change when adding the connections. so, what should I do? should I create new families from scratch for beams and cols? or export the whole structure to advanced steel then add connections?

thanks for your response.

About "create a new families from the scratch" - Steel connections use only certified families. These kind of families cannot be created from the scratch because they are in relationship with Advance Steel database.

About "export the whole structure to Advance Steel" - this will not solve your issue. When the model will be imported into Advance Steel, it will map your elements to the ones from the database. Advance Steel database contains only certified elements.  If the profile will not fit with one from the database, Advance Steel allows the user to associate the element with one from the database.

This is a known limitation. I recommend using only standard profiles / certificates in your workflow.

THEN THERE IS NO WAY TO CREATE A DETAILED STEEL STRUCTURE WITH COMPLETE CONNECTION IF IT IS NOT OF CERTIFIED FAMILIES SECTIONS EXCEPT BY IMPORTING THE DETAILS FROM AUTOCAD INTO THE SHEETS.

COULD YOU PLEASE ADVISE ME ABOUT WHAT SOFTWARE SHOULD I IMPORT MY STRUCTURE TO IN ORDER TO CREATE CUSTOM CONNECTIONS?

I have the same issue. I can't undestand why!

I began a new project from my template and I deleted all previous structural columns and structural framings and I loaded the German certified families for those objects.

When I am trying to load a new column or a new beam, it turns that it has always the same size, no matter what I select to load.

It makes me crazy.

Could you please help me to understand where is the catch?

Hi @DavidEEP,

Can you describe, step by step, what are you doing?

Thank you

Hi @catalin_lang

On the menu I click on Insert - Load Family  and then I select the German family directory and I select p.e. a steel structural column (p.e. an IPE 270 section). When I load it to my project I get some warning messeges ( The parameter ........ doesn't exist in the Family. It will be ignored.) All the parameter's names are in German, I am using an English version of Revit. All the parameters in the warnings are important parameters that describes the section (height, width, elastic modul, noiminal weight, flange thickness, web thickness and so on).

When I insert the column in my model and I misure it, it seems to be a column IPE 240 and not an IPE 270. How can I fix this?

Is the problem in the different languages between the used family and the default software language? How can I manage this?

Thank you for your help.

Hi David,

Your supposition that you are loading a German translated family in Revit in English is correct. In order for the steel profile to be correctly created the family needs to be in the same language as Revit.

If you want to use the European steel shapes, in English, you will have to install one of the following country folders: Belgium, Finland, Greece, Norway, Netherlands, Romania or Sweden.

Please see the following link for more information on the subject.

Hi Triantafillos,

I see that the button displays Greek language.

Can you expand the dialog, by pressing the "Show details" button? We want to see what is the error about.

Can you also tell us the Revit build, installation language and Windows version and language?
