Stairs Reinforcement

Dear all,

We would like to start reinforcement detailing of a stairs.

What is the best way to do it?  Do you really need to model in-place as a component?

Can you add fabric sheet in it or rebar only?

I appreciate your response.

Thanks and Regards,

Daniel

Hi @DanielBorg83 Daniel,

There are two ways to show stair reinforcement:

  • 2D detailing using detail lines and detail items. This is typically sufficient for LOD 300-350 projects and is commonly used during the design/consulting stage.
  • 3D rebar modeling, which is generally used for LOD 400 projects where fabrication-level detail is required.

So the best approach depends on the project requirements and deliverables. For most design-stage projects, 2D representation is enough. If fabrication and coordination are required, use 3D rebar.

Hi Hossein,

Thanks for your response, but what is the best way to create the construction and detail drawings of a staircase, showing the reinforcement in plan and section.

Can you please show me an example of a construction detailed drawing of a staircase done on Revit?

Regards,

Daniel

Hi @DanielBorg83

Many users are doing this in Revit there are lots for video and tutorials for this.  Here is an example from a company is worked for on this subject but look at all the other drawings on how rebar is being utilised for full 3D modelling proposals.

Hi @DanielBorg83

This drawing is provided as 2D lines and detail items.

You can post this as a concise reply:

Hi Daniel,

For construction/detail drawings, I would recommend using 3D rebar modeling if you need accurate reinforcement plans, sections, quantities, and schedules. You don't necessarily need to model the entire stair as an in-place component just for reinforcement; the approach depends on how the stair was created and how much control you need over the geometry.

For a typical reinforced-concrete stair, you can model the reinforcement directly with Rebar in Revit and then create plan/section views for the construction drawings. If the stair reinforcement is mainly being documented rather than coordinated/fabricated, 2D Detail Items and Detail Lines can also be a practical option.

Regarding fabric sheets, Revit supports fabric reinforcement, but whether it is the best choice depends on the actual reinforcement design and the type of stair. For conventional stair bars, standard Rebar is usually more appropriate.

I would suggest starting with the stair geometry, then placing the main longitudinal bars and distribution bars in 3D, and using dedicated plan and section views to produce the reinforcement drawings. This gives you a much better workflow if you later need schedules or quantities.

Hope this helps.

Dear Jay,

Thank you for your time and examples.

I will have a look and find some tutorials, mostly one on how to add fabric sheet in a stairs., not managing yet.

Dear Muhammad,

Thank you for your time.

For our type of drawings I think we will do the 3d rebar modeling, as we need to check clashing with other rebar.  Stairs once done by an architectural department on a different model.

With regards to the fabric sheets, the design includes a fabric sheet in the waist (bottom) of the the stairs.  I have made a model in space of the stairs, and manged to add 3d rebar in it, but still not managed to add the fabric sheet.   Yes, working the reinforcement in the section views and plan views is working well for me, as you can modify the shape quite well.

Thanks and regards,

Daniel

You may struggle for Fabric Sheets but you can simply place them using - Fabric Sketch > Bend Sketch - you will need to edit the sheets sizes manually is using the Stair Tool

Thank you for the explanation,  I manged to include the fabric mesh in the stairs.

All information will help with doing the construction drawings for the stairs.
