Revit Crashes on closing project

Hi,

A number of us in the office are now encountering Revit 2017 crash every time a project is closed.

"Autodesk Revit has stopped working"

not specific to a particular project or build (2017.2 and 2017.2.1)

happens both on PC and bootcamp.

if any one knows a fix that would be great.

thanks,

Pete

Hello Peter,

Thank you for the post, since you state it is not project or version related it is a hard question. This does make me think it has to do with an add-in, but from now on it will be narrowing down to the issue.

The following process should narrow down which add-in is causing the issue

  1. Go to C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\#### (Replacing # with the version you are working with)
  2. Copy all the add-ins in the folder to the desktop.
  3. Delete the add-ins in the original folder.
  4. Relaunch Revit to see if the crashing continues.

If it does not, copy the Add-in files back to the original location, launching and closing Revit after each Add-in is put back in the folder to see which one is causing the issue.

Once you find the offending Add-in verify that it should be compatible with the current version of Revit (from the add-in manufacturer), and if so try uninstalling it through the Control Panel, and then reinstalling it.

Hi Josha,

step by step i went through all the addins and found the offender.

unexpectedly it turned out to be the Autodesk site designer extension which sadly i can't attached but can email in case you (or others) needed it for any testing.

As far as i know there had been no updates performed for this add-on but removing it has fixed the crashes not only on my machine but also the others who were being affected.

i had noticed that a separate window would appear when the crash happen as seen in the second attachment if that helps at all.

thanks again.

Pete

After a Windows update last night Revit started crashing when I closed a program.

Reading the comments in this post I immediatly removed Site Designer and it did the trick.

So if anyone else encounters this problem, SD is probably the culprit (and the Windows update).

This problem has begun with my release of Revit 18.2!  It was OK yesterday and I have had Site Designer for ages.  Should I follow the same advice you gave before?

Hello Andrew,

First of all, best wishes for 2018.

Strange that it suddenly happens, and since yesterday there have been no updates or installations on the computer?

At this moment I would suggest the same solution, to start with Site designer and Precast (if you have this one installed). I know Site designer and Precast add-in both have some issues in Revit 2018.2 at this moment. It would be strange though that it suddenly happens.

Would love to hear if it worked out for you.

Josha, firstly apologies I should also have wished you a Happy New Year.  However, you have solved the problem, Site Designer was the culprit as for others. I have therefore moved the addin to my desktop.  What I find hard to understand is why Autodesk appear to do nothing about resolving these issues which spoil the use of a very good, but costly, piece of software?  I have already had to remove the P&ID addin in the last month because of issues raised in an earlier post.

Still thank you, it is much appreciated. Andrew

Great it worked, and I fully agree with you that this has to be solved. I don't work at Autodesk myself but will make sure they pay attention to this recurring issue. Thanks Andrew!

I had the same problem begin after 2018.3 update. uninstalled previous updates / add-ins from Autodesk Site Designer and Autodesk Precast. Lost a lot of time from crashes.

Just had same with 2018.3, was working fine since the update arrived until last Friday 1tth and got 100% reproducible crash on file close. Save to central seemed to be OK in spite of this.

Tried repairing, removing/reinstalling Site Designer but only removing and leaving off the machine worked

Be nice if Autodesk could get their own add-ins working together...

Same here with Revit 2018.3... happened overnight - Site Designer removed and all is good again...

Where is the Autodesk response to this? Not like it is a 3rd party add-in causing problems (although it sort of is)

Yep same. 2018.3 and 2019 fixed by removing addin.

Excellent, removing the site designer tools solved the problem for me.

Shame an autodesk product was causing these issues.

I find it incredible an official Autodesk Add-in crashing their own product has persisted through multiple versions 2017, 18, 19 at least with seemingly no attempt, certainly no success, resolving it.

I totally agree with you and frankly it is worrying that Autodesk persist in not responding to this issue but keep pushing AutoCAD!
