Revit 2022 saving as Revit 2009

Hello,

I am a Campus Technician for a school district and have a few students who are having an issue with Revit 2022.

Some students are finding that their Revit 2022 projects are saving as Revit 2009 files. When they try to reopen it asks them to upgrade to 2022, which is already installed on the PC. Upon doing so the file cannot be found. We are using a licensed version of Revit 2022 Educational. This seems to be affecting only some users.

It is not tied to the PC they are using as one student can use their credentials on a PC and have the issue, but a student in the next class will use the same PC and not have any issues.

I found this regarding the issue, however, we don't use or have access to BIM 360 and we are not using their Cloud service.

There are other suggestions provided in that article it was not just about cloud services

Did you go through the guided solution?

Yes, we tried the Guided Solution as well as locating a back-up file. Hit a dead end using guided solution and the backup file did not work either.

That's not possible 🤔.... Revit is not backwards compatible, so 2022 isn't even capable of saving back to 2020 much less 2009.  that said... in 2020, when import an IFC, that IFC will convert to 2009 prior to bringing it into the program. I don't see that message in 2022, but i don't know what its dong behind the scenes 😊....

  • Are they using IFC files?
  • Are these pre-existing project models?
    • what format are the existing models in?
      • open Revit and pick File > Open and look below the thumbnail on the right. that will tell you the current version.
  • How are the files being created?
    • what templates are being used?
      • what format are the templates in?

File was created using Revit 2022. File was save as an .rvt file to the PC. When locating the file on said PC and opening it, thats when I get the error "Your model needs to be upgraded from Autodesk Revit 2009 or earlier to Autodesk Revit 2022........"

When I click on the "Upgrade the model" I then get the error "Cannot open file".

It's driving me insane. I've watched the student with the issue save file and they are not doing anything out of the ordinary and are not receiving any prompts. The file had been worked on several times and saved several times without issue.

This is an incorrect error message.  Update the Revit 2022 to the latest build.

I will give that a try. I didn't see an option to update 2022 and we are working off an educational license so I'm not sure what kind of updates can be made.

Plus, multiple students use the same PC(each with their own login) and yet this is only affecting one student on this PC. Students who have used the same PC the issue is occurring on have not had issues.

try upgrading to the latest serves patches or hotfixes as @ToanDN suggests 😊.

just curious though... What template was used to make the file? was it the Out of the Box template from the install?

I wish I could upgrade. Unfortunately the class is using a Revit 2022 textbook and are bound to Revit 2022 despite us having 2023 and 2024 at our disposal.

You can stil use Revit 2023 or 24 with the textbook. There is very little difference. Some icons might look different, especially in 2024 - but other than that maybe switching will solve whatever issue you are having. My only guess is that when you installed Revit, some error got generated, or there might be some virus on your computers.

I would suggest having IT run a virus check on the computers.

i meant upgrade to the latest Service Patch/Hotfix/update, what the latest is for 2022.... not to a new format 😊

There are some workflows for to "downgrade" the content, but the resulting model is not a "Revit Model". It is only suitable for backgrounds or a reference... Maybe....

Most commonly, export the model to an IFC or DWG from the newer version. Then the resulting file can be imported into the older format of Revit. You would still need the newer version of Revit to do this though.

I just had this happen I work remotely. I had a file on my local C drive completed and copied it over the company server at the end of the day. I tried opening it the next day from the server and got the same message. I am using 2024. I then opened the local copy on my C drive and did a file save as to the server drive and seems to be working. Not sure if it was pulling from the local copy while trying to open the server copy since the names are the same and something gets confused. About had a heart attack thinking the whole file was corrupt. Luckily the local copy was still good.

I just had the same issue. Tried to open a file I was working in yesterday and got the message "Your model needs to be upgraded from Autodesk Revit 2009 to Autodesk Revit 2023." I was working in the model yesterday with Revit 2023 and did not save any new components or anything to it. When I click "Upgrade the model", I get another message that says "Data in file ... is corrupt and needs to be manually recovered." Anyone know what I should do? I also work virtually and the model is saved on a shared Google drive. I don't believe anyone opened the model since I was in it. Thanks!

Have you seen this from Autodesk

https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Your-model-needs-t...

and maybe

https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Your-model-needs-t...

BTW, did you all remember to turn on file versioning (Version History) and backup in Google Drive before today/yesterday/last time you were in it? Might be worth exploring to see if a viable version of your file still exists.
