Portal Frame

As a more common participant in the Revit Architecture discussion group I find that I need to be advised on a structural issue.  Can someone give me a simple heads up on drawing a simple portal frame please.  I also need to introduce a central post in some of these frames.

I have tried to follow the Revit help files but have been totally defeated by the 'Structure' tab of revit and completelly confused by Beam Systems.

What I have managed is a simple grid with steel columns and some 15 degree roof beams, nothing is connected there are no haunches etc etc.  See below....help pleaseRP124 Frame.JPG

in such a case I'd prefer to use a Revit addin, such as Frame Generator

In my screencast I used  Frame Generator for the major structure ( Frame Generator from Autodesk Exchange APPS) and for conections I used Steel Conection : Beam and Column End -plated and Column Base  ( from Revit Extensions for Autodesk Revit 2015)

Is Frame Generator availble for Revit 2016, which I am using? Also, surely it is up to me, as originator of the post, to decide if it is solved or not and it will not be unless it is availible for 2016.

you ca do it very simple by using a mass elelement , Divide Path for edges, draw lines and then in Project : Structure > Beams - use Pick Lines....

in addition to my previous post I've made a screencast that shows some ways of doing steel framing using a Mass Eelement as a helper...

Constantin, Frame Generator is native to 2016!  Have had a go but am struggling, having produced a frame it then treats element of it as a single component and I am struggling to move it to the correct place and also edit it, is it worth following your earlier screencast?

The Frame Generator is certainly not easy to use! Also, despite the help files, the Rvit 2016 version does not have the 'brackets',Loads or Results tools as indicated so how do I get the junctions between roof members and columns designed, any ideas?

as I know the Frame Generator is not yet available for Revit 2016 , but there is no problem to make a steel structure using Frame Generator in Revit 2015 (or R2014) , save it and then open the file in Revit 2016 . The steel structure will be loaded (by upgrading) and you will be able to refine it by elements here....

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

you are right....I don't understand how it appears on my menu of Revit 2016....after installing it in Revit 2015. Steel conection there is also ...but it must be from Revit Extensions......Strange is that Frame Generator do not appear for 2016 in Exchange Application ...maybe 2015 is also fit to 2016....

As far as I know it was part of Revit Extensions that was made available as update through the application manager.

Yes it is availible but a number of aspects are missing as stated before, why is this? Does anybody know?
