Missing parameters in family.

Hi all,

I have made an structural element, including column, base plate, bolts etc by using connection toolbar in steel tab. I want to use it as an adaptive family. ( I couldn't make it in family environment because it doesn't have connection toolbar).

Here is the process I could make it as a family but it loses many parameters. My question is, how I can make a family out of a complex element such as connection while maintaining the parameters and information?

This is a revit tip that I used to solve the issue of making family including elements and connection.
Revit [Tip] - How to Save Revit Project Components/Elements as Family (.rfa) - YouTube

1. select all elements, modify tab, save selection.

2. open model in place, place ref. line just as guidline.

3. select ref. line and load the saved element in 2.

4. deselect ref lines by filter and copy the elements over the ref. line.

5. remove ref. line and select the elements.

6. group elements and save the group as family. file>save as>library>group

Then I open this family and load it to adaptive family, but it loses many parameters.

I hope I could explain the issue well. I would be grateful if you could help me about it. Here I attach some photos and revit files.

1.) select your objects that you want to become a family.

2.) group them.

3.) Click on file and click "save as"

4.) click on library and save as a family.

Thanks for the reply,

It's not possible to group these elements, it shows error. Mainly because the elements are already grouped as connection and bolts! Even after exploding the connection and bolts, it's not possible to group them with plate!

Besides, if I make a group in Revit environment and want to save it as family, it saves it as revit file, not revit family file rfa!

Dear expert members @ToanDN , @L.Maas@johnjmbennett ,

Sorry for my direct message. Currently we deal with a project that faced this problem. I would be grateful if you could possibly suggest any solution for this case.

Thanks in advance for your attention,

Hi,

for this I think it cannot be done, because the elements in a connection are in fact steel elements not revit elements,  plate, bolts welds and even the column is now a steel fabrication column.

what does that mean,  so when you add connections or any function of the steel ribbon, they become what I would see as Advance steel objects, especial the bolts, plate and weld.

they are created via the API of steel connections added to revit.
this means you cannot do certian things with them as you would in standard revit, like group objects.

this is all explained within the revit help,  under the steel detailing section.

I maybe wrong, but sorry I do not think it is possible, hopefully someone proves me wrong.

Hi

Thank you very much for the reply and clear explanation. Actually our purpose is to bring the element from RVT environment into Family one. Till now we could in some extent solve it with breaking the connection and converting the elements to normal bolts and plates and etc.

I guess the main issue was the trick that I used to copy element from model in place environment into family.

Anyway...

Currrently the main issue is transfering the ifc parameters from RVT into Family. Such as following photos,

ifc R.PNG

ifc F.PNG

Is there any way to transfer the parameters from RVT object into corresponding object in Family environment?

Thanks again for your attention,

The best,

hamid
