I am a light user of Revit. I just use it enough to export the structural steel to AutoCad. When I export the steel, all the roof and level steel is put on the same layer in Autocad. When I am in Revit and I select a piece of roof steel, it says roof. And when I select steel from the second floor, it says level 2. Is there a way I can put the roof steel and second floor steel on different layers? This will save me hours of work. Other wise I convert it to dwg, then try to navigate the drawing trying to identify the roof steel then change the layer.
Are exporting to 2D or 3D?
If 2D you should look at setting up different plan views in revit with different view ranges. This way you will only export those model elements that are in that view.
You should also look at the DWG export options which effect layers. The defaults is AIA standards.
If it is 3D you are looking for than I don't know. You can also isolate certain categories in the view using Visibility Graphics or the temporary isolate.
I think your best bet is to use the DWG export options and then use layer modifiers. You can add {level} as a modifier.
It looks like the steel is on the same layers. But when I click on a piece of steel, it show a different name e.g. roof steel or 2nd floor steel. Not sure I can export the steel layers differently.
