Instance parameters in family will not change in revit 2018.1

I have families with instance parameters that change stuff in the project which have all other versions but in 2018.1 they will often not work. I created a video that shows what happens. https://www.screencast.com/t/XCsrlGwERKO9

I can check the box or change the numerical value and the "apply" button will become active until I try to select it. then it grays out and the change that I made reverts to what it had been.

Sometimes if I go to a different view or reopen the project or sync then it will work as it should.

Hello @haydenwse

Can you share the family so we can check and test personally?

Here is a simple family that creates a reveal in concrete walls.  I should be able to change the length of the reveal after it is inserted but it doesn't work.

Like I said before, the problem is intermittent.  Some times it works other times not.  it seems to work the first time I try after opening the project.

Hi Hayden,

Thank you for taking your time to post this on the forum,

I've had a look at the test file and it seems to work fine the couple of times I ran it through my 2018.1,

Are you still experiencing it? If so I would be more than happy to look through your journal file from one of the sessions,

Let me know if you would like that,

Best Regards,

Thanks for looking into this.

Yes I am still having the problem.  I might be able to change an instance parameter 1 try out of 5.  It seems to work better if I sync the project and immediately change the parameter.  These are all families that have been created in previous versions and used for years without problems.

How do I send a journal?

Hi,

How many years exactly? If it's several years it might be time to recreate the family.

You can access the journals from this file path:

C:\Users\westerj\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit 2018\Journals

Of cause change the user name to yours,

One other very strange thing is that I most of the time can change the instance parameters when I have Jing running to make a video recording to send to the forum.  Last night I finished editing my project in a couple of long video recording sessions because that was the only way that they would work.

I have attached the log and txt files for a session I just did.  In it I opened the project, selected a family and changed an instance parameter.  The first several times I tried it worked fine than the last several it did not.  I then closed the session.

I have been creating these families since 2010 but they are constantly being edited and updated in the family editor.  Some will have 50 or more parameters with lots of nested families in them so starting over ain't ganna happen.

Jacob, have you had a chance to look at the log files I sent to see what is causing my issue.  This problem is causing enough trouble that I will not convert any other projects to 2018 until is it resolved.

HI,

I don't really see any direct lines referring to it failing because of the family, so it would be interesting to see if you can reproduce it in the Revit sample project or an empty project for that matter.

As well as your family being from 2010, I can see that the project you are working in is originating from 2013, so it would be nice to get clarified if it's project specific.

Also because the only appearing difference between your test and mine is that you are using one of your own projects, where as mine is a new project. - Which is interesting because you are the only one so far to be able to reproduce the behavior.

This problem may be hardware related.  The project is work shared and I haven't' been able to reproduce it on other computers in our office and it doesn't happen very often when I have a Jing recording session running.

Jacob, Hayden,

Have you had any luck in solving this? Currently I have this problem too.

Normally this happens when you change the parameter value in the properties box and then move the mouse of the properties box. As soon as this happens values are rest.

If you change the parameters while you are placing the component it works too, albeit after placing it reverts to having the same issue.

As Hayden mentioned, the problem is intermittent and I found that sometimes is solved by pull the instance parameter arrow and then changing the parameter to the exact value.

However this is a workaround and should not be happening anyway. I have run an audit on the file to no avail.

I'm experiencing the same issue as well...The instance parameter will appropriately from time to time, and then just stop adjusting according to the changes typed in.  Once you move the mouse it resets back to the previous setting.

I tried creating the family again from scratch, and this worked the first few times I made changes to the instance parameter, only to have it stop working suddenly after completing a few other changes elsewhere in the project.

The project itself was upgraded from 2014.

It keeps happening intermittently in different projects I'm working with, and doesn't seem to be family specific.

Any input would be great....It would be nice to hear that I don't need to create all new families and projects!!!

i experience the same problem. it may help to hit the "apply" key directly after changing the type parameter.

I have found that all of the above mentioned work-arounds will sometimes work.  Sometimes, the only thing that will get the change done is to reinsert the whole family but that causes other work-flow problems like dropped dimensions and since these are all parts of precast assemblies, lost info in the assembly.

The work-around that I am using on this project is to change the instance parameters to type parameters and then create a different type for each new value.  I know, very sloppy way to do things but at least I do not need to start over.

Fortunately I upgraded this one project before finding this serious bug in the program.  Needless to say, I will not be using 2018.1 again until this problems gets fixed.

Its a good workaround, haydenwse.

Let's hope Autodesk solves this promply though. I do not want to go through all the families as its a very good way to miss important information by human error...

I have the same problem here too.  I have a family with a piece of angle with 2 bolts.  There are 2 parameters for bolt edge distances and I can change them in the browser but when I move my mouse back to my project and don't click apply, it reverts to what it was.  To make the changes stick I must click apply.

Previously I didn't need to click apply.

Cheers

Steve

Further to my post above, I have found that if I change 1 parameter then either click apply, or move my mouse back to the model, the change sticks.  However if I change 2 parameters then try and apply or move my mouse, the change reverts back to how it was.  Also, if I make the change then press enter, the change won't stick.

I have tried clicking "Apply" after each change but it will only occasionally work.  It also sometimes helps to create a 3d view and change it from there.  The most troubling part is that it is hit or miss as to if it will change.

Very frustrating.

I consider this to be a very significant bug in the systems and needs to be addressed before I do any more projects in R-2018.1.
