How to align to strong reference instead of geometry?

Hi guys
I am having the issue where, looking at a pair of beams from the top, the align tool is selecting the sides of the beam in preference to the strong reference plane that is the Center (Front/Back). In fact I have to tab or zoom in quite a lot to be able to select the center plane.
As these are beams I almost always want to align just to the center so ideally I would like it to highlight the center only no matter how zoomed in I am.
I have attached the files I am working with, the only reference planes on the sides are those in the edit extrusion and I have set them to not a reference. As such there should be nothing at all for the align tool to highlight especially not in preference to the strong reference plane in the center.
Does anyone know if this silly issue is fixable? It is quite inconvenient to zoom in and out to align and lock hundreds of purlins together. (I am using Revit LT and do not have access to the "beam system")
Thanks in advance.
