How do I go about creating a family of basic ground-based pipe supports?

Hi all,
I would like to create a family of ground-based pipe supports with basic UB or PFC profiles and such like. Eventually it will feed into different support configurations, such as simple T-type supports, arches, or more complex square structures. My basic idea is to create the various profile outlines, nest them into line-based families to create the basic 3D components, and then nest that into the main family which controls the configuration of the structure.
Am I on the right track, or should I change my approach? What pitfalls do I need to watch out for, and what functions/parameters are critical for me to build into the family?
Thanks!
