Family with rebar included

Hello my name is Gabriel and im a civil engineering student.

I would like to know if is possible to create a family with rebar inside like old AutoCAD blocks for my final degree project.

I have been working in a company for 2 months and all the structural elements were precasted, with always the same rebar, so I would like to know if this is possible in Revit, to have a correct workflow.

I have been searching for weeks and I found this:

- post where people claims it is not possible:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-structure-forum/add-rebar-to-family/td-p/7794580

- video where it seems possible:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDt7hcnmvpw

- Million videos where people inserts rebar in each element slowly.

- Some people saying that you can put rebars in a lot of elements at the same time with extensions, but not explaining where get that extensions, or wich extensions, or how to do that without extensions.

Thanks in advance.

hi

it's not possible to add reabr to family

reabr is element parameter it will be different from element to another

Family definition is a shape with general parameters but rebar is a type and element issue.

also the video you posted claiming rebar is added into family is only copying beam with rebar drawn in project not in family selecting the beam and rebar in the same time.

all rebar extensions is now an addins like official one called now ( Navite Revit Extension) you can get it by making and autodesk account as astudent and download the version 2020 or 2019 and go to autodesk desktop app and download it.

or like other addins you will get trail or free or buy like sofistikit or other on app store

Hi @Anonymous . Structural rebar cannot be added to the family, but we have workaround for it.
1. Place the bar in the project.
2. Export it to IFC.
3. Import the IFS into the Revit and Bind link.
The rebar should become an editable family (category will be Structural rebar). After that, add the parameters to it. But adaptability will be lost. The reinforcing bar will become a family (like a general model for example) and you will need to create a form in the family using extrusion or sweep and parameterize it with dimensions. This family will not see the host element. You need to create your own parameters and fill them yourself or using Dynamo. An example of such a family I will add in the attachment.

Best regards, Pavel Plotitsyn.

First of all thanks to everybody who repplied!

I'm trying to follow your guide Pavel but im a little stuck since I am a noob. So if you can help me a little more it will be amazing.

I managed to do the first 3 steps or at least i think so. But then I am struggling to convert the rebar in a loadable family.

I created a block with several random rebars inside and then one with just one inside but I dont know how to save it or export it etc. Maybe is because I did not add the parameters to it? I skipped that step because I did not know how to do it and I tought I can learn after with some youtube tutorials.

Also I opened your file and it is just what I want but I need to learn how to reach that step so I can create mine with the required rebar etc.

I attach a screenshot of my current state, my Revit has spanish client so I edited it a little to clarify.

My English is not very good, so I can not explain in detail. You must save the family.

After that, open it and create the form you need. After that you can add dimensions and parameterize them.

You must also add your parameters.

After that, you need to open the structural family and load the rebar.

Other interesting thing is rebar container. But you need learn revit api for using it.

Hi again Pavel, and thanks, but I think I messed up something since I can't save the family.

My save button ("guardar" in spanish) is grey so I can't follow your steps:

Why is this happening any idea?

My steps:

First path:

1 I started a project.

2 Added a structural foundation family (the cube)

3 Added Armor to it with Revit rebar tools (1 bar in this case)

4 Exported the model in .IFC format.

5 Opened a new project using the .IFC file created in the step 4

6 Checked that I can see the structural rebar family in the navigator

7 Tried to save but I can't.

Second path:

1 I started a project.

2 Added a structural foundation family (the cube)

3 Added Armor to it with Revit rebar tools (1 bar in this case)

4 Exported the model in .IFC format.

5 New project and straight Link IFC option. This is worse since no structural family appears in the navigator:

So I guess the first path is the best one but I am doing bad the Bind Link step, I searched how to do it in youtube but still can't. I tried it in Revit 2019 and Revit 2020 since I can access remotely to my university computers.

Sorry, I was wrong. It seems that this workaround is not available with Revit 2015 or later. So you can only change the file from the attachment.
You can also create your item, create a group and save it as a rvt file. And after that you can load it to any project. It will be like a block that can be changed or ungrouped if necessary.

Okey! thanks @PavelAndI think groups can do the work for most precasted elements I will also try Rebar Containers and the @Ahmed_Muharram suggestion thanks everyone for help me!
