Elevation - 2D & 3D icon

Hi

What's the difference between selecting 2D & 3D icon on the elevation view (see below). Thanks in advanced

2D=  it is only in that view 

3D =  it effects other views (where visible) inc 3D view

As in, if you drag the level markers.

I can still drag and extend the level markers even though they are listed as 2D in elevation
