cut by face not showing on plan

I have a hip roof and I am partially cutting steel members by face.  Looks great in detail and 3d view but is not showing in the plan.  The beam is still showing extending even though it's cut.  

Is this something that will not work in plan view?

Edit the family and set Plan symbol presentation to Project, and untick Precut.... box.

Yes.  You were asking about the beam, were you not?

I am using the cut-by-face tool to show a taper.  But the taper varies depending on the location around this roof.  I probably do not have time to do what you are suggesting.

Don't have time. It a one time operation to uncheck one box and change one value from a drop-down list, takes 30 seconds approx.

Dont have time in that I don't know how or have time to fumble through help articles looking for the answer.
