Create Beam

Not applicable

I am attempting to create a wide flange beam that I can manipulate. I have subscribed to Lynda.com, however there is not any "how to" videos pertaining to this type. Attached is a CAD drawing of the manipulation I would like to create. Basically, create the family so I can manipulate it in any manner. The families that are already in Revit are not designed for this type of void extrusion. Let me know if there is any way.

Thank you

Use existing content and add an opening by face.

Thank you for responding. I am not sure of what you mean exactly. I was able to learn how to use Revit thanks to step-by step procedures. From there I can figure many things out. But in class we were never taught family creation. I have learned some from tutorials online along with the Lynda.com subscription, but I am running into a roadblock. I was able to manipulate the beam ends into the form I wanted, however the editable part was 4'. When I loaded it, the manipulation was stretched. Basically, it would not let me lock the placement of the void extrusion, which is done by dimensioning first. A step-by-step process would be greatly appreciated. I was also able to create the beam from the "family" drop down list. I even had drawn the manipulated ends, but when loaded, it had shown up as a normal beam.

Thanks again

No need to do this in the family. You can cut the beam with on opening. Look on the Structure tab for Opening by Face.

Thanks,
Erik

So you know, it is entirely possible to do what you describe as part of the family, it does require some advanced family creation skills that can really only be taught by trial and error. The attached shows a custom haunched beam family that we created for my work, what is pictured is the same beam with difference haunch values. it uses voids in the family tied to reference lines and planes plus a slew of formula driven parameters to adjust as the depth of the huanch is changed. Thanks, that does look complicated. The other response I received was a solution that was right in front of me. I was able to modify it without disrupting the family.

While creating haunch beams, which template shall we use? I tried to model haunch beam in Metric structural framing- Beams and braces but as only left and right elevation can be used for modelling, haunches in the front elevation cannot be modelled. Then, I tried from Metric generic Model. However, I was able to create but at the end, beam details and schedules does not appear. What could be the solution?

Thanks in Advance.

doing the same with whichever family you need.
