Contour Cut on plate

Hi all, couple of things I need help with.

1. I'm trying to cut the edge of a plate to match a column face and I'm having some trouble. I'm using a contour cut which usually works for me on framing elements but I'm getting an error saying "Countour cut does not intersect plate". Unless I'm misunderstanding it then the boundary I've drawn does cut the plate. I've even tried offsetting it a few mm to make sure it completely envelops the unwanted section of plate.
Pictures attached for clarity (Hopefully) and also the model if it helps. This is in Revit 2021.

2. Is there a way to split a steel beam? I need to add in a splice connection and the split command doesn't work. Do I really have to model in another beam?

Thanks.

Hi @AJBuckers ,

  1. Been trying to find an answer/workaround for this issue for the past year as well. I'm just gonna come out and say it - WE CANNOT DO A CONTOUR CUT THAT IS NOT PERPENDICULAR TO THE PLATE'S WORKPLANE. Tried it in Revit 2022 and 2024, still the same "does not intersect plate" error even though it shows a preview of how you want it to look. Hopefully someone's gonna correct me and show us how it can be done since people online would much rather correct you than help you out lol. On a somewhat related note, holes work on non-workplane faces of the plate. Maybe you can use that as a work around plate cope.
  2. With Revit 2022, the split command works with structural framing and columns. Not sure when it started but try updating your Revit 2021 with the available fixes and check again.
