Constraining structural framing family to reference planes

Hi,

I am trying to constrain the ends of the framing member to the reference planes they are on so that the length will change with the rail length parameter in the image below.

How can I constrain the framing member to the reference planes or is there a different solution?

Drag the blue dot to the ref plane and lock the pad lock.  Do it for both ends.

That was my first idea to, but no locks came up. Are they supposed to with structural framing families? I have tried loading some different standard Revit framing families but the similarly no constraint locks come up... Any other suggestions?

Are the reference planes you want to use in the family or in the active model?

In the model... i have some joists and they can change when we are moving stairs around, thought it might be easier if they were locked to a ref plane , while we figure out the best configuration for the stair. All my attempts to lock to plane have been fruitless.

I find nested and shared structural framing families do not work well within other families and not sure if it is down to influences in the background of Structural Framing Families as regards wires, placement, extensions etc.

I have found creating user defined extrusions manually with the same section profiles used by the structural families and then constrain as required then edit the category to structural framing.
