Autodesk Answer Days: Structural Rebar

Rebar creation is cumbersome, but with some practice it can be done relatively fast (not as fast as in 2D tools, but usage of BIM (Revit model) in global has more advantages).

What we need, here in Europe (maybe wider), is to be able to adjust schedules, numberings for rebar and meshes and more freedom in Rebar and mesh creation (for example, you cannot put mesh in isolated structural foundation).

SOFISTIK done some great job in this area, but users need to pay a lot for Revit (aproximately 8000€ for Suite) (or rent it with high prices) and then pay even some more (1000€ / year i think) to SOFISTIK to do something Autodesk already said that it can be done in Revit, but it can only partialy.

What are your plans in this area? Revit tools for rebar and rebar mesh creation and manipulation is still very undeveloped in compare to other commercial solutions available on the market.

I think that Autodesk did not play the fair game by selling "Building Design Suite Ultimate" to structural engineers with marketing that said "Complete solution for Structural Engineering workplace" and then kill the "AutoCAD Structural Detailing" software in 2016 (there is no AutoCAD Structural Detailing 2016) leaving it's users in wonder.

What Autodesk did was aquired two great applications, Advance Steel and Advance Concrete from Graitec and then promote it as solution for a construction documentation. Many users asked: "ok, then what is with "Structural Detailing" software?" Autodesk said, quote: "it is for small projects". Later that year Autodesk announced that "Autodesk AutoCAD Structural Detailing software is no available or developed anymore".

Let me ask you few questions:

  • If Autodesk stoped development and sales for AutoCAD Structural Detailing, is it because of lack of small projects?
  • What is with all of Autodesk users that bought Building Ultimate Suite, and subscription with it? They suddendy cannot use Structural Detailing, but Autodesk is forcing them to new Revit version because they cannot save in the older versions?
  • Does anyone in the Autodesk thinks that it would be fair to give your users Advance Concrete and/or Advance Steel as a compesation for killing the software you sold them and they based their work on it?
  • What is Autodesk's final answer for doing reinforced concrete construction projects (rebar drawings): Revit, Advance Concrete or Nemetschek AllPlan maybe?
  • Does Autodesk still thinks that Building Design Suite Ultimate is "one package solution for structural engineers"?
  • When we will be able to proudly say that "we do our reinforcement in Revit"?

Totally agree with mirko, in revit 2017 structural connection I thought I can do dimension for the connection created by Revit. However, I can't use the connection for construction documentation. Really? We bought the revit package and now is not available for construction documentation, need to purchase advance steel and advance concrete?

Yes, you also need to buy Advance Concrete and/or Advance Steel.

Hi Mirko,

From my collegue experience... Advance Concrete real development stopped on version 2015.1.

In version 2016 there were only one error fix (slope rafter length correction) and nothing more.

There are no forum for Advance Concrete, no manuals or help for version 2016 and later.

Probably Advanxce Concrete will follow the same way as Autodesk Structural Detailing - sooner or later...
