Use voids as nested family

Hi all,

I am going to build a family for flangs. I have a couple questions to point me in the right direction.
Different sizes flangs have different numbers and sizes of holes. Number and size of holes are in parameters. This parameters I will use for my array to cut out the holes in the flang.

The questions I have are:
1.) Is it possible to add a nested family with just a void?
2.) Can I use this nested family (void) to cut out holes in my flang?

You can make a family that is just voids for the flange holes but I personally wouldn't go that route. I would create the flange families with the bolt holes included and have parametric values for the hole locations and diameters. I personally use as much OOTB AWWA Flanges that I can but the design parts don't have bolt holes because they are not meant to be used for fabrication. You can copy the AWWA flange .RFA's and add the bolt holes you want in the new copied family. I use revits fabrication parts for most of my flanges when spooling for fabrication and that seems to be fine. If you are trying to make some sort of custom flanges for SS or Aluminum then I would make the whole flange family as 1 item, not a separate family for bolt holes and flange body. You can but I fear that will give you more trouble in the long run.

Also have a look at THIS discussion.

In short voids and arrays usually have negative impact on Revit performance.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.
