Text Fields in Schedules

Trying to understand how schedules work.  Looking at a schedule created by someone else. Would like someone to confirm something for me.

Depending on what type of schedule we make, Revit presents parameters to use.  If I want to add multiple text fields to this schedule, just to use to enter text, here is what I think I do:

Click "Add Parameter"

Give it a Name

Discipline: Common

Type of  Parameter: Text

Group Parameter under: Text

Thanks for your help.

Another related question. The schedule created was a Mechanical Equipment schedule.  I tried to duplicate the schedule so I could experiment with one and keep the other unchanged.  However when you duplicate it you basically have a the same schedule with a different name both dependent.  When I add a field in one it adds it to the other.  So why can't I create and independent Mechanical Equipment schedule?

Schedules are just reports of model elements.  All the fields you added while creating the schedule are actually added to the elements.  They will be available to add to all other schedules of the same category.

But you can choose what to show on a particular schedule.  Says you added 6 text fields F1 to F6.  You can choose to include only F1 to F3 on Schedule #1 and F4 to F6 on schedule #2.  Use the Add and Remove arrows for such task.  Don't use delete button except when you want to permanently delete the fields.

See attached for more info on scheduling.  You can watch video tutorials on YouTube as well.

I want two schedules both of which are Mechanical Equipment Schedules. As you described in your paragraph below, you can choose what parameters to include for each schedule.  However I must have created the second schedule incorrectly because when I add or remove parameters it effects both schedules.

Here is what I did to create the second schedule.:

  1. Opened the schedule already created.
  2. Opened the properties browser
  3. Clicked Edit Type
  4. Clicked Duplicate
  5. Gave the duplicate another name.

When I do this I noticed the new schedule name at the top of the properties browser.  I named this schedule Connection Schedule, the existing schedule was just named Schedule.  When I click the drop down at the top of the browser I could choose either schedule from there.  But when I make changes to one the same changes are made in the other.  They are not independent.

When I go to my Project Browser and under Schedules/Quantities  it shows only one Mechanical Equipment Schedule which seems to be telling me I do not have two independent schedules.  I am thinking that I should clicked on the View tab, then Schedules on the ribbon,  then Schedule/Qauntities  and created another Mechanical Equipment schedule there.

Is this thinking correct?

Schedules are indeed independent of each other. Being able to have different headings indicates this.

Schedules only report information that is part of the model. When both schedules contain the same parameter (column) they are just reporting the same information in both schedules. They are duplicates in that regard.

Understand that when you change information in the schedule you are changing information in the family. Not just in the schedule. You can't just have an empty text field like with Excel. A text parameter means it is a text type in the family as opposed to an area or length or any other of the types available.

Your browser is only showing the one schedule because one of them is on a sheet and the browser is set to not show schedules that are on sheets. Right-click on the "Views" heading at the top of the browser > Browser Organization.. > All

So, when I add a text parameter to the schedule it becomes part of the family if I understand you correctly.  OK, I see how that works.  When I check the family in the property browser the new parameter is shown under "Dimensions".  I want to put this parameter under "Electrical" which probably means I change the Group parameter to Electrical.

When I right click "Views" at the top of the browser and "All" I still only see one schedule of this type in browser.  I need to possibly place the other schedule on a different sheet though not necessarily.

And I still cannot choose what parameter is included in the two schedules independently.  When I duplicate the schedule as I explained above when I add or remove a parameter from one schedule it adds or removes it on the other.

See screencast on how to duplicate a schedule.

You aren't duplicating the schedule, you're duplicating the schedule types.  To duplicate the schedule, don't use the properties palette.  In the project browser, right click the schedule name and choose duplicate.  It'll create a second schedule named SCHEDULE1 that you can edit independently of the original, including renaming it.

Thanks. Couldn't  really follow much on the Screencast because of the size of the image. Looks like a lot of info.
