we typically create a copy (detach from central) and then strip down the copy to be shared

remove all links that will not be shared as part of the transfer.

they will need to rebuild (remap) the model on their end anyway so minimize the files as much as possible.

detail views, sheets anything not directly affected by the modeled elements can be removed as well.

be sure that when you create this copy that no proprietary information (contractual) is not being shared if possible with contractors or other parties.

Contractors will use the design model to create as-built scenarios for construction scheduling

consultants will use the shared model for coordination in the SD,DD,and CD process.

so be clear on who will be receiving this model.

are you using worksharing? (central file) models.

you need to enable worksets to create a central file for worksharing purposes.

then you will be able to detach from central etc.

when you first create a project in Revit you will need to do a few things

1. open your template, save as project name

2.enable worksets to begin using worksharing- on the Ribbon find the collaboration tab then find the Panel named Manage Collaboration.

3. select the Worksets button

Worksets.PNG

select OK

4. do a save as

Save As.PNG

select Yes now this file becomes a central file.

5. synchronize to central and relinquish all mine and close the file.

6. open the project browse to where the new central file has been saved.

Central -Local File.PNG

Note: the options at the bottom of the image (default settings)

when you open this file each time it will create (or Update your Local File)

when you want to transfer or share with outside consultants or Contractors you will select Detach from Central.

this create a stand alone file for you to send out and share.

Thank you for this!

I receive many more models than I send out but I try to take the time to clean any up that I do send out. I have yet to receive one that has been cleaned up. I have come to hate having to collapse multiple unnecessary project browser categories as I am searching for a particular view or set of views. Scrolling through irrelevant views gets tiresome real quick and despite taking pride in my browser organization, I know it has little use to anyone receiving my model, so I always strip it down to relevant views.

In addition to what you've already mentioned, I usually also purge unused and audit.

@Anonymous, if you aren't using worksets, you don't have to worry about detaching from central. That is only for workshared models in order to break the link with the central model which you wouldn't have if you don't use worksets.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

@RobDraw

i agree completely, but question when and why anyone would not use a work-shared model.

I understand smaller firms may take this approach, due to manpower.

from my experience there are more benefits to using work-share model best practices approach than not.
