Shared Parameters Greyed Out In Family Types Dialog Box

I am using Revit 2016, and was attempting to make a tag for duct fittings which shows "UP" or "DN" and an arrow.  I was going to add shared parameters, one yes/no checkbox for up, and a text parameter that was "UP" if up was checked or "DN" if it was unchecked.  I was then going to have a label that displayed the text.  I can add shared parameters to labels but in the Family Types dialog box I can only add Family Parameters, Shared Parameters is greyed out.  Is this something that is only available in Revit 2017 and later, or am I doing something wrong?  Please advise.

For some arcane reason shared parameters don't work with tags, you have to use family parameters.

Hi @tim102289

As Ben mentioned, share parameters isn't available when using tags. I attached a sample project for you to use as you wish. The quickest way is to shift between Family Types. You can either pull generic annotations into your Duct Tag and add visibility parameters as you wish as depicted in the video below. Or draw "lines" for the arrow in the Duct Tag (then assign visibility parameters to it) and use plain text or a label with say, the comments label associated to control the "UP/DN" text.

You can play around with the sample project to get everything "visually correct" according to what your trying to achieve.

I hope this helps! Smiley Happy

I guess that's something that changed in 2017.  I ended up making some basic Detail Groups to accomplish what I needed for the time being.  In the future I may revisit the symbol idea, and see if I can make a symbol to replace elbows in Medium detail view.  It would be awesome if I can make something that scales with the size of the duct but that could be tough to accomplish with the text aspect.
