Setting a default material (for pipes) for a system type

Currently, it seems the default pipe material when creating new pipes are all "uPVC", for any System Types.

I'd like to set it to work like this:
1. Before creating a pipe, when I change the "System Type" to "Domestic Hot Water", and click "Apply", the pipe material would change to "Copper Type B" by default.
2. Before creating a pipe, when I change the "System Type" to "GREASY", and click "Apply", the pipe material
would change to "HDPE" by default.

How can I achieve that in Revit? Or as close as to that, so that I won't use the wrong material when creating pipes.

Thanks a lot.

Bit of clarification required here.

Are you talking about the material of the pipe as defined in the Segment setting?

Or are you talking about the material applied to the pipe system as a visual appearance?

First please be noted that are are 2 materials to be considered: Material Pipe Settings (Routing Preferences thru Pipe Types) and Materials Graphics (Pipe System - Type).

Changing the Pipe type can automatically assign the material as per pipe setting, while Changing the system type can only allow you to automatically use the graphics material.

To what I understand you want to change ONLY the system type which cannot override the Pipe types.

The ONLY possible way is when you create pipe you need to assign both the pipe types and system type. These 2 cannot control each other.

Note: Please Click solution if my answer is relevant to your question. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

To be more precise, this is what I want:
Use case 1:
1. Try to create a pipe by clicking Systems\Pipe icon. A "New Pipe" will be displayed on left panel.
2. Click on the Mechanical \ System Type, and change it to "GREASY", and click on "Apply"
I want the pipe type at the top to change to "HDPE". Now the pipe type doesn't change.

Use case 2:
1. Try to create a pipe by clicking Systems\Pipe icon. A "New Pipe" will be displayed on left panel.
2. Click on the Mechanical \ System Type, and change it to "Domestic Hot Water", and click on "Apply"
I want the pipe type at the top to change to "Copper". Now the pipe type doesn't change.

It seems to me that I can't specify it, but can use filter to color it red if it's not the material I want.

The pipe type and system type are not inter-dependent and you can't get Revit to automatically select the correct pipe type for you. Steel pipe can be used for many different applications, ditto copper, ditto PVC.

You need to decide which pipe type is appropriate to the system that you are modelling. Once you change to that pipe type then that will remain the default for the next pipe. You can also right click an existing pipe and "Create Similar".

The pipe appearance is based on the material of the pipe as set in the pipe segment (per my earlier response).

You can however set a colour override and/or material override for the pipe system if you want to identify systems by colour.
