Revit vs. AutoCAD MEP

Hello, All

I am a Mechanical Engineering Senior Student at the Metropolitan State University of Denver.

MEP Engineer is very interesting for me. So, I decided that I would like to work MEP field after graduate.

I found that there is two software for MEP; one is Revit and another is AutoCAD MEP.

There are a few questions I would like to ask:

1. Which software(Revit or AutoCAD MEP) do most companies use for MEP? and which software will companies use more in the future?

2. Could you recommend the textbook to learn each software (I have not used Revit and AutoCAD before)?

That depends on the company you plan to employ at. Many use Revit, but some are still Autocad shops. There is also more programs utilized by firms than just those two (but Revit is very common).

I found has three books:

• Mastering Autodesk Revit
• Mastering Autodesk Revit Architecture
• Mastering Autodesk Revit MEP.

When I train users, I use the Ascent Training Manuals. You can buy eBooks, or physical books. They are very good with their books, so I'd highly recommend them.

If you want to learn Revit MEP, then just get the MEP book. I haven't seen too many people use AutoCAD MEP here to be honest. Pretty much every MEP job is done in Revit, so I'd lean towards Revit MEP for sure.

If I want to learn Revit MEP, do I need to know architecture concepts?

Also, does the Revit MEP book have basic Revit concepts because I have not used this program before?

You can concentrate on the MEP side alone if you want. If you look at the website I linked, they also have the Revit Platform books, which will go into detail about the platform itself. At the end of the day, if you want to self-learn, then you'll need to buy two books, one for the Revit Platform, and one for Revit MEP

Do I need to study Revit Architecture such as Floor plan Before Revit MEP?

Do most companies use the imperial unit or metric in the United States?

because there are two books: Imperial and metric.

1.  Revit.  There are still companies who use AutoCAD MEP, but mostly because they haven't had time to invest in Revit.  Revit is the future for MEP.  I just changed jobs 7 months ago to a firm that used AcadMEP.  As I knew Revit, it didn't take long before I converted them over.  The 5 jobs we are working on now are all Revit.

2.  Any of them will work.  Mastering Revit MEP is a good one.  I'd also look into learning Fabrication for Revit.  ASTI is a good resource for this.  Designing and Modeling components that use real world specs is a good thing.
