Revit line pattern spacing

Does anyone know what is the length of a space, dash, or a dot pattern in revit?  I've seen where you place in a value after the type, but I don't know what the "1/2" or "1/4" values mean.  Is that saying that the dash for the particular pattern would be equal to .5" or .25"?

Also, what would be the best value to add for a line pattern if I did not want to go any lower than 1/8"=1'-0" scale?  The issue I'm running into is I have added a pattern to my pipe systems in revit and they are hard to see as I increase my scale from 1/8"=1'-0" to 1/4"=1'-0"  I'm looking for a general line pattern standard for a double dash, center, and double dot line that will still distinguish my cold water pipe from my hot water pipe as my scale is increased from 1/8"=1'-0" to 1/4"=1'-0".

Yes the values represent actual printed size, and they are scale indepenent.

I like these four line patterns myself. I use filters in 1/8" and 1/4" views to assign the appropriately sized line patterns based on system classification. In this way the actual printed spacing of the line pattern gaps is the same for either scale. Sometimes I change the first dash to something longer if there are mostly long, unubstructed runs, but mostly I leave it like this, because on short segments if there isn't enough room for a whole pattern it doesn't look right.

Oh, and a note of caution. Stick to Dashes unless you plan to give your lines a fat width. At narrow widths the dots disappear when printed.

Thank you so much for these examples.

This is very helpful.
