Revit Crashing Constantly in Large Model

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to have a look.

Revit is crashing very often with one of our larger projects. It's a massive model with a lot of links loaded in. The model will crash 6 or more times per day with our users who are accessing the model. It comes in randomly and not to anything specific.

Upon launch of the project, we receive a warning saying something along the lines of: "Your current session is using more memory than your computer can efficiently support." Some of the computers opening this project have only 32GB or RAM, some have 64GB of RAM, one has 128GB of RAM. I don't think this is an issue, but I am not sure.

After some period of time we will encounter the "An unrecoverable error has occured. The program will now be terminated etc..."

This happens several times per day and is causing us a lot of issues. I have tried opening with audit, but that hasn't seemed to help. The links are out of our control, and I'm not sure if that could be the cause of the issue.

I'm trying to read the journals, but I can't pinpoint the problem. Maybe someone here could?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or support.

i did skim thru your journal files and didn't see much. one of the messages said:

  • "You have made some changes to the Revit model that have not been synced to the cloud."

How are you working on these files, over a VPN, in BIM360, on a Personal Cloud server?

it doesn't matter how much memory you have if the software (Revit, Windows, whatever....)cant manage it. How big is the actual Revit model your opening?

  • is splitting up the model into smaller chunks an option?
    • by floor grouping, areas, etc...
  • Are you using Scope boxes to help manage the view areas
    • View templates can be used to mange what scope boxes are used for specific view types.
  • Are all the links "Needed" all the time?
    • how many links are you talking about 10, 100, 500?
    • unload the ones that are not needed
    • use View Templates to help manage the links in specific view types

I could keep going, but his is a start....

Similar to the idea above, is placing the extra links on worksets an option? Maybe starting with the visibility setting set to "Not Visible" so each user can control what links they see in their session or view.

Yes, we are working on BIM360 that is hosted on a contractor's cloud.

There are probably in the ballpark of 40-50 links, some of which are very large.

got lots of questions..... but most important is WHY? why are the there so many links? that is A LOT of links for one building. if this is a case where there are multiple buildings on one site, each building should be its own model and worked on as such.  its OK to have a collaborative model, but work in it should be limited.

There are 3 buildings. North Tower, South Tower, and Station box. It's an underground metro that runs through these 2 buildings. We are doing all 3 of the buildings. The north and south tower models are fine, but the station model has to have parts of the tower models linked into it for coordination, unfortunately.

I think I know where the answer is heading. I will see if we can remove some of the links in the station model where it's possible. I hope that Autodesk can update the software to handle more resources. Buildings are getting larger and larger with more detail being required, and we have the hardware to handle it.

for the metro station model,

  • Do you have a lot of Civil (C3D) or CAD files loaded?
    • if so, are they Imported or Linked?

In my office, we make a Civil Central model with all the civil links in it. Then, acquire coordinates from the civil file(s). Next we link that Civil Central model into the building model(s) as needed.

We don't have any civil links in the model. Also, the only DWGs that are linked in are for the schematics, and they are very light files.
