Problems with visibility properties in nested families

I'm making exit sign families in Revit 2015 with a generic annotation nested in a shared, face hosted lighting fixture which is in turn nested in a face hosted, wall mount exit sign family. The shared ltg fixture (which contains nothing but the generic annotation) is visible in plan view & the exit sign geometry is visible in front/back & left/right views.
In the generic anno I have yes/no properties linked to the direction arrows. These properties are linked to properties in the shared face lighting fixture which are in turn linked to properties in the exit sign. Everything works just as I expected. Except...
Just for testing, I added 2 pieces of text to the generic annotation ("Side A" & "Side B") to make sure my orientation was right. When I did this the yes/no properties of the exit sign work fine in front/back & left/right views but they are grayed out in the plan view. Deleting the text objects in the generic anno & reloading restores the yes/no properties in plan view.
This seems like a bug to me. If not, can anybody explain this behaviour to me? It doesn't matter for this application but I might need (want?) to add text objects in another application.
Thanks for any help.
