Post export to .DWG, element problems.

Hello all,

I am new to Revit in my workflow and am having a problem exporting .dwg's so that I can use them in Autocad. Currently I am accessing a 2018 central model with Revit 2019, selecting the upgrade option but not saving at any point, and navigating to the view I would like to export. After exporting everything is fine and working well. If I close the Revit model without saving, however, all of the elements shown in the views I exported disappear and are no longer in the project when I open the central model again. I am afraid I am making irreversible changes to the central model without having saved at any point. Can anyone provide some insight? Thanks

Make sure you are Detaching from Central (even if you are upgrading)

Consider copying to a temp folder or a local drive or you are that nervous about messing with the Model.

If you AD license include 2019 does it include 2018?

Thanks for the response. The "Detach from Central Model" check box is checked and not editable when I select the file from the "Open" dialogue box. The model is ok to open and close multiple times without disruption of the contents until I export .dwg's. It is only after exporting that all of my ductwork goes missing, could there be a setting in the export menu I am missing? Doesn't seem like there could be a problem there...

Are you selecting 'Work with the Model Temporarily' from the prompt when opening?

Have you tried 'Saving As' in another location?

Is the ductwork included in the native Model or from an external link?

After exporting are there any actions in the 'Undo' toolbar that show changes to any of the DW?

I have never heard of Exporting to AC having any impact on actual Model elements.

Yes I am careful to select "Work with the Model Temporarily" from the initial prompt.

I have "Saved As" to another location, this second file opens retains the elements and is unaffected by the export process. I believe the ductwork is a link to the native model? I am not fluent enough yet to know exactly but when list of links dialogue box appears there is a $ before the elec., arch,  and all other links, except for the mechanical portion that I am opening. I will have to double check about the undo option with a different file, although I might not do so just yet until I am sure I am not creating problems with the central model.

If the ductwork is coming from a linked file you would see a dialog when opening the Model that all links are being upgraded. These are temporary upgrades. This would explain the fact that after reopening the Model the links are missing (Revit upgraded the host Model but the links were temporary and thus not saved)

Hmm sounds possible. I will attempt to take screenshots the next time I go through this process just to confirm what may be happening. Thank you for the assistance.

That is normal, just go to manage links and choose "reload from" then look for the links....

Treat the links similar to xref in AutoCAD.
