Multiple Visibilities of Annotative Family

Hello

I am pretty new to Revit and am trying to convert an existing family's graphics into a standard graphic.  The item in question is a nurse call station.  It is a full 3D item that has an annotative symbol when viewed on a floor plan.  Ideally, one family would be able to have multiple graphics options based on the nature of each particular instance.

When I go to modify the physical family, the annotative symbol turns out to be its own embedded family.  I understand tying visibility of objects to a shared instance parameter that can then be selected individually, but the fact that it is embedded makes it seem like it stops here.  If I click symbol in the physical family, I can select the multiple visibilities.  However, when the family is loaded into a project these visibility options are not available.

The piece I feel I am missing is how to tie the embedded annotative family's parameters to the physical family's parameters.

Has anyone encountered this and found a solution?

Ah!  Found the solution. First you have to create a parameter in the parent family for each visibility (I made them all the same name to make it less confusing).  Then, in the parent family, you have to select the nested family and click 'Edit Type' in the properties tab.  From there, for each graphic parameter of the nested family you click the small button to the right of it and select the parameter you wish to associate it with.  If you want it to be one overall type, make the parameters in the parent family instance.  If you want to tie the visibility options to different types, make the parameters Type and select the graphics individually for each type.

Hope this helps save someone some time if they bump into the same issue.
