linking models with coordinates

ok, i have been trying to figure this out but i simply cant seem to. i want to link in a structure model and use that as the base line for other linked models. so i want to import the arch model next but i just want it to import and land exactly where the structure model is. there must be a way to do this. to hopefully better explain, essentially i would like a way to not have to try and manually move models around and hope ive placed them exactly where they need to be.

As long as the models have acquired coordinates from the same source, all models should line up when linked together.

Sorry, don't know enough about your workflow to even hazard a guess. Someone needs to be designated for all others to coordinate with.

Try link them origin to origin, if they are off, then try by shared coordinates, if they are still off, then come back and discuss further.

In order to achieve this you have to modify the architecture model's "project base point" or "survey base point" or both, depending on which one you will use in the project. In the architect's model, while selecting the "project base point" (blue crossed-round object shown in below screenshot ) change all the properties to match what you have in the structure model. Make sure both base point symbols are turned on from the VG Overrides - Model Categories, under "Site", to show these in the model. After doing so, zoom extent if you're not seeing it.

Distance of the architecture model to the project base point should be the same as the structure. Take 1 reference wall or grid, like the ones nearest to the project base point, measure it and match with the distance of your structure model, if they are not matching then move the project base point as required, make sure you unpin the base point (paper clip symbol with slanted line, you can pin & unpin it by selecting & clicking to it) before moving it. Best thing to do this is in 3D view and set it to top view for moving horizontally.

You have to do the same vertically, make sure your floor levels are matching with the elevation settings of the structure model. You take 1 floor or level as a reference and move vertically to match the settings.

After changing the settings don't forget to lock or pin back the project/survey base points, save it and close. You architecture model is now ready to be linked to your structure model (or vise versa) using either "shared coordinates" or "origin to origin".

Before doing all of the above, make sure you have the rights to change the architect's model coordinates, otherwise, you have to discuss and agree with them to set the model correctly for you.

ok that makes sense, when i import the 2 links i see the project base point for the structural model but i dont see one for the architectural model.

You have to do the changes from the arch model itself before linking them. You may need to discuss this matter with the architects so you don't need to do it again in the next updated arch model.

I am not sure if you are able to see the base point symbols of the linked models from the host model but you can check if grids or wall between the two models are now aligned, if they do then you have done it right.

ok thank you, unfortunately the architects are not very cooperative on this project. I appreciate your help though.
