Light Fixtures not cutting voids in the Linked Architecture model

Anonymous

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a project with Revit, I linked the architecture model to my project that I work on, but when I place a light fixture family on the ceiling the family can't cut a void in the ceiling as I get when I work directly on the architecture model without linking it to another model, Someone please let me know if there is any way to solve this problem (see image for more clarification)

Thanks!

You would need to edit the architectural link. There isn't anything you can do to change the linked file from the referencing file.

We routinely insert recessed fixtures into our models which rely on linked RVT. It works just fine.

Since you say this works for you if you are hosting the light in your own model the family should be ok, so it must be an issue with the way it is hosting in the linked file.

Without seeing your model I can only offer a few suggestions.

In an RCP view try picking up a light fixture and then attempt to host it to "face". What happens?

If you like post your RFA file and I will run a test with it.

You cannot cut any elements in linked models. Period. Architects often copy monitor light fixture from Electrical model to Architectural model to cut the ceilings.

Ok, you are right!

I checked and our recessed fixture families (e.g. pot lights) sit inside the hosting surface with the mounting flange visible but do not actually cut the host. In practice this doesn't bother us.

Check your Family Category and parameter Cut with voids when loaded when Loaded in project.

all right,,

in the Elec Model which it has been Linked the arch model you can not cut with voids but when it loaded in the Arch model i can be.. this a new consider thanks and this is what happens in Navisworks also we find clashes between Elec Fixture and Ceiling but we grouped them as Dummy or host clash.

pics will show this also

Yes, with naviswroks it doesn't bother us, but in revit we lose the realistic visuals of most lighting fixtures families especially downlights

@RobDraw  and @ToanDN have answered the original query and I would think their posts should be marked as solutions. The rest of this thread is chat and speculation.

Have you tried putting a Void Extrusion in your family that doesn't cut anything in the family, but may cut the ceiling?

I played around with this a long time ago and can't remember off the top of my head if it worked or not.

It's already been stated and confirmed in this thread that there is nothing that can be done to the linked model from a family.

Tagging in to this old thread - what worked for me was to make a part of the geometry of the Light family visible in plan and reloading the modified family into the Elec model. That showed the position of the light fixtures in the architectural RCP.

That might work visually but it still won't cut a void in the ceiling in a linked file.

You could use this tool but be aware that it will alter the architectural link which the Architect might not be happy about?: https://agacad.com/products/bim-solutions/cut-opening/overview
