Is it possible to create a new family category?

I was exploring the forums and came across this post,  Is it Possible to Create a New Family Category? It was posted a while ago and the last update on the post was in 2016. I was wondering if there has been a change in Revit that would allow the original question.

Thank you -

As far as I know, no... But you can create sub-categories in selected categories.  i suggest finding the closest fit and create a sub-category for your needs.

No, but subsequent releases of Revit have been steadily adding additional family categories in response to industry requests.

Family categories have a few coded differences (cut plane display, nested annotation display, etc.) that Autodesk would need to expose to the user if they ever did decide to allow for custom category creation. Personally I don't think it's a good idea, firms already face issues with creating BIM silos that make collaboration frustrating. Custom categories would just exacerbate that problem. Imagine linking in a file and having to manage visibility or data retrieval on categories you didn't even know existed?

If you are looking for a specific category for a product, let us know and someone can advise what the most appropriate category is. You also can request it in the ideas forum (no promise on ever happening, though). What version are you on? Newest version = most categories.

As was stated above, the categories have inherent differences in features and visibility and it would be a mess if we can randomly change things.  For example, light fixtures have hard-coded photometric parameters and ies files, other categories obviously don't.

I think the recent additions of categories (plumbing equipment etc.) completed the list quite well.

Revit Version: R2026.4
Hardware: i9 14900K, 64GB, Nvidia RTX 2000 Ada 16GB
Add-ins: ElumTools; Ripple-HVAC; ElectroBIM; Qbitec

Exterior Trim would be helpful.
