How to see constraints in a family ?

I was meddling with a symbol in the Family Editor and in true ‘Microsof knows what is best for you’ style it decided to add constraints. How can I see them so that I can remove them ? The procedure described in the help under ‘Reveal Constraints’ doesn’t work, for the ‘Reveal Constraints’ button is missing.

Which version of Revit do you use? I have the constraints button in my family editor (Revit 2017)

If you do not have that button than there is no other way to see them. However I seldom use the show constraints button.

Normally if you add constraints, it will override the automatic constraints. And if flexing the family gives errors about constraints I let Revit remove them and then add new constraints to get it to flex properly.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

Hi @Angayo,

Hope you are well! Smiley Happy

The "Reveal Constraints Option" is also available in Revit 2016 as can be seen below. Below is also an indication of a parameter associated (driving) some of the constraints in the family. You can unlock it by selecting the family dimension as shown below.

Also,  you can see which parameters were assigned in the properties pallet, or you can click on the family types icon and then unlock, view or delete all of the constraints/driving parameters at once. (Proceed with caution though and only delete the ones which you created by accident).

I hope this helps! Smiley Wink

Thanks for your replies.

First, I had two lines on top of one another, so I am not sure what happened. Probably it was the pre-existing line that had a constraint in stead of the one I added.

Second, I am not stuck on this as I don’t need to move the pre-existing line.

Third, in 3D drawings the family editor does indeed seem to include a button to view constraints, but not in 2D drawings.

The left end of the selected line is glued to the vertical line that runs from top to bottom. It can be moved up and down, but changes in length when I try to move it left or right. There are a few dimensions that can be unlocked.

Yet there appears to be a constraint left. If I try to move the left end away from the vertical line, Revit complains :

Hi @Angayo

There isn't a "Reveal Constraints" option when editing Annotation Symbols, Family Types, yes. Could I perhaps ask you to share/upload your family, the complete one. e.g. - Family Type with the nested annotation symbol which you're having trouble with. It is sometimes easier to work with the actual problematic file opposed to trying to replicate the problem at hand.

You should be able to find the constraints by selecting the various constrained elements and looking for the locked padlock symbol.  You'll probably have to check all of the available views to do so.  You should also make sure that the visibility of all dimensions is toggled on in your views, constraints are typically tied to either dimensions or reference planes.

Again, I don’t need to remove that constraint, so this is only a matter of understanding constraints, not about removing one.

I don’t know how how to toggle on visibility of dimensions. In fact, I don’t know  how to make anything visible. There is only one view and it has become completely blank for some reason.
