how to draw verticle conduits in the plan view?

Ok so here I am trying to detail an electric room, I have panels transformers and the like right, wellall I want to do is draw a conduit from the connection point with an elbow looking up then place a verticle conduit on the elbow and draw my horizontals to the locations where they belong is there an easy way to do this? when I am placing the conduit the end point elevations are greayed out on the conduit tool menu. Do I have to draw a verticle conduit in an elevation view??? with this software I really shouldnt have to do that it should all be available to me in the plan view.

Hi Pete,

 

Start the Conduit on the Plan as normal. When entering the second point (which will be directly above/below the first), enter the desired "Offset:" on the options bar and click Apply, and it should create a vertical run.

OK so I tried what you were saying, but when I try to add my second offset right above the first I get a Null symbol, should I be looking at the properties menu when doing this procedure? Because there are 6 areas in the constraints box Horizontal Justification, Vertical Justification, Reference level , Offset, start offset (grayed out) end offset (grayed out) It just seems like I am missing something here and it is probably really basic I have browsed through the help menus and the other available information. I am using Revit MEP 2014 would that be an issue?

I know this is an old post but I'm trying to follow this procedure in Revit 2023 with no success. I'm trying to do exactly what the OP is asking - bring conduits vertically to surface without having to make sections and draw there. Advice appreciated.

Why not use a section if it works? Most of us use a combination of views simultaneously and switch between them as needed.

Hello,

 

Funny that the solution does not work for you.

It can be a little bit annoying to have to delete the lowest horizontal segment, but it works quite fine.

Another option, draw a horizontal segment, change the elevation value, and click apply twice.

What is ridiculous about trying to draw conduit in plan view WHICH SUCKS for anyone who is trying to VDC a building, is that when in plan view you ONLY have a add a vertical option

.  T H A T    S U C K S.  I don't always want to draw a vertical when starting a conduit run in plan view, AND THERE IS NO WAY TO TURN IT OFF!!  I don't even have a choice of distance    Have a switch to turn it off and fix soon as possible please There are many projects out there that we are still using 2023 on some projects.

 

PLEASE make this an imperative hot fix.

What else is more frightening about running conduit on a VDC project is the insanity of what it does and there should be more control to people doing this kind of work.  I HATE running conduit, becasue it is so insane what it does and the ridiculousness of what it does too.

 

Revit placed a 5' x 5' jbox at the start of a 3-1/2" connector on a jbox I had already placed.  Please hire electrical expert who know what the heck they are doing when it comes to routing conduit in revit.  It really does suck and noone likes it when more owners require VDC.  Noone is listening!

Even with that button on, Revit doesn't add a vertical section unless you change the conduit elevation.

Hello,

 

If you draw a conduit in one elevation, check CHANGE SLOPE, and draw a new conduit segment, you will create a slope conduit.

Very important, check the valid angles for conduits in the Electrical Settings.

You must be doing something I am not because there is no way to turn the change the slope or elevation button off in plan view, as I stated in me previous comment!  When drawing conduit in a plan view, I don't want EITHER control on.

I hate drawing conduit in Revit.  5 Views are required for routing conduits.  Elevations are best for viewing and 1 3d, and a plan view, setup to see the top and bottom of conduit, if that is possible.  A pain to setup and get right for sure.

A connector is required on boxes in order to have start and end points.

Placing a default conduit connector starts of with a default of 2'. NO SUCH CONDUIT EXIST!  Change it to the minimum of VDC detail, usually 1".

 

Start drawing conduit from an elevation.  Here is the first screwup in Revit.  My intention is to get conduit out a box, top or bottom.  Oh look I can't do that!!!  DANG IT.  Only chance I have to cancel because you know know better than me.

Ok, lets try to draw a conduit from top view.  Step 1 select a connector.

At this point, revit doesn't like what I want to do.  Imagine a work flow of 100's of these these problems on a large project.

 

 

Like I said before I hate running conduit because it doesn't work.  With the thought us running multiple conduits from one room, do you expect users to route one conduit from start to finish with a forced workflow?

The switch I have highlighted toggles from add verticle or to change slope.  I DON"T WANT EITHER.

Connecting conduit in elevation view  Again, it a worthless venture.

I can turn off automatically connect but not slope or vertical.  What the heck is that supposed to mean, because if I touch a connector or end of conduit, it will connect, something that should be left on because I connected to the box connection point.  So I don't see the point in that button if doesn't what I told it either by connecting to box connector.

All the thing you had to do was to stop those stupid messages and let me connect to the pipe with a point in space instead of telling me that there is an obvious stopping point.  What ever else connections there are, leave them alone so I can work in stages instead of start to finish.

Conduit routing is a pain, and I hate it.  Stop the messages and let me put my own stopping point ANYWHERE.

Well, no, there isn't. What else could there be? Either add a vertical or change the slope, how else are we going to connect them. For now we're confined to our stupid three dimensional space.

 

You're getting "no auto route solution found" error either because your conduit type settings aren't setup properly, or you're trying to cram them to a space smaller than the fittings can fit.

 

Like I said before I hate running conduit because it doesn't work.

 

There are many quirks and Revit "rules" which you have to follow, but people are running pipes, even sloped pipes, even on large projects. Conduits should be even easier.

Again, how do you plan to connect them, if by neither a vertical nor a sloped one?

 

Here's a little video of mine. Note that I do plumbing and this is the first time I'm touching conduits, but it's my understanding that in Revit those two are pretty similar.

You need to invest time or enroll in some MEP course to learn how to do it.

It absolutely isn't ideal and there are a hundreds things that could be improved, especially in sloped piping, but it's not impossible, or even that difficult once you learn how to do it (learning includes setting up your system, conduit routing preferences, finding families that are right for you, and learn how to use all of that together). Getting frustrated over how Revit does things won't help you, and you can forget about Autodesk ever fixing anything, they don't care.

Conduits are very easy to connect from plan views , elevations and even 3d views, that's why I don't like these less conventional methods which create harder work than they have to.  I just need conduits to be in the right place, because I have a higher level of control once conduit racks are in space. Getting a conduit rack without having to worry about start to finish is obviously more difficult.

I prefer to build a rack or run first, then do the finer point of controlled routing with 90's and other bends.  Getting the ends joined works like a charm for the most part.

One more trick, and this WHAT I LIKE ABOUT CONDUIT CONNECTIONS.

Conduit do auto-connect in the best ways possible.  Here is an example of the good points of auto-connect which again, I do like.

Getting 3 concentric bends can be a lot trickery.

With placement conduits, I let the connections do all the work.

Once conduit connections are made I can do what I want.  Collisions are easy to fix.
