Getting a STEP (.stp) file into Revit

Hi,

My organisation has some .stp 3D model files for our products (example - fire alarm panel 3D model in .stp format).

Our plan is to get this .stp fire alarm panel 3D model into the building BIM model.

For this to happen we first have to get the .stp file compatible with REVIT.

I understand that there are a number of softwares that help with this like Autodesk Inventor.

However, I'm also hearing that this can be difficult and that the quality of the model can effected after converting the .stp to REVIT?

Anyone have experience with this and the best way to feed .stp 3D models into REVIT?

Thanks.

Easiest way is to open your .stp with Inventor and export as cad file (options - dwg 2007). After that.. you can (insert) import-cad into your rfa without any problem. The interesting part would be if you will want to use that geometry and not drawing over its edges. For this you must partial/full explode it into revit to make it capable for subcategory & materials. If it's parametric you'll need to model it based on  imported model. Don't forget to scale you imported dwg (edit-type - mm - 1).

There're many ways to do it.. such as export as .step from inventor or any other format..that fits your requirements and won't get an exploded geometry into Revit.
