General Steps to creating any system within Revit or Revit MEP:

1.  Add the components that make up the system (i.e. fire sprinklers)

2.  Add the main component the supplies resources to the components (i.e. pumps)

3.  Select one of the components and "create a system" via the contextual tab

4.  Edit the System via the contextual tab to include all components and main equipment

5.  Generate the layout of the system via the contextual tab

6.  Adjust the layout if necessary

7.  Complete the creation of the system

8.  Adjust/Size the system based on conditions (i.e. friction/velocity)

I made a video:

Select the fixtures you want to connect.

Click the "Piping" button on the ribbon menu.

Click "Generate Layout"

Choose the layout you want.

Finish layout.

Check your fixtures and make sure they have a plumbing connector added. Select the fixture, click Edit Family, and check it out. There should be a green circle (at least 1) somewhere on the family, this is the connector. If there is no connector, go to the Create tab while in the family editor, and choose Pipe Connector. Then change the connector's System Classification to whatever system you need, and change the diameter to the pipe size you need.

1. select F9 on keyboard and drill down to the system you are not able to see the generate layout tab for.

2. select the system and you could see the button on the ribbon. I have had issues in the past when you have two systems within one family and the icon does not show. So try the system browser.

3. or could be that you need to check the ribbon and see if you have a contextual (GREEN tab) already open on far right.

I'm having this same problem.  I've used the generate layout tool several times today.  The contextual ribbon is visible, just not the "Generate Layout" tool.

Almost all of the answers are based on the assumption that the tool is showing up and then expain how to use the tool.  It is not there.
