gbXML Preview not Showing

devonpowell

When exporting to gbXML the small preview pane to the left of the options is not showing up. Usually it shows all the little green spaces and analytical surfaces if I choose that option. The gbXML file is exported successfully, there just isn't a preview.

I am using Revit 2017.2 (17.0.1117.0)

Hello,

I noticed that you are trying to export the spaces, just to confirm, have your model the spaces and rooms, and did you create the analysis model?

Hey Fabio,

I did model the spaces, with zones, and they are all properly defined (no errors in the detailed tree view). The gbXML is exported correctly, and I've tested importing it into my energy model successfully.

What is the analysis model, and why would it effect the preview, but not the actual export? I know it export gbXML via the API you need to create an analysis model first, but I don't really know what that is.

Thanks!

Update: I used the "Create Energy Model" button (Analyze Tab, Energy Optimization Panel) in the hopes that it would create the analytical model. Still no green spaces in the gbXML preview pane.

Hello,

Just to check, have you tried to use rooms instead of spaces?

Can you share the model for checking?

Fabio,

I  have not tried using rooms, because I need to use spaces for the gbXML export (HVAC design) and the gbXML is exporting correctly with the spaces.

I cannot share the project, so I made a sample project, and that one worked! Not sure what is up with my current project, as it has all the same Energy Settings.

Sample Project with correct preview:

My project with spaces/zones listed in tree view, but no preview.

Hello devonpowell,

I believe there is something different in your model, since the spaces are listed but the model is not visible...

There definitely is something different, I just can't figure out what it is... any more information on what the analytical model you mentioned earlier is? could it be a certain view settings, that overrides the gbXML preview view?

Hello.

I alerady was havethe problem like yours.

I created the spaces in a specific project fase and on the export gbXML settings was selected another phase.

In your picture the Project Phase is "TI". Select a space in the model and check if's the same Project Phase.

Best Regards.

Thank you for your post.  In this case there could be an issue with phasing for sure, or at its core, miscommunication within the file (mild corruption).  First verify phase settings and export, but also check the file integrity.  To verify, open the model with an ā€œAUDITYā€ checked in the open dialog box (bottom left corner).  Once open, save as a new central over the existing (or make a copy to be sure).  Once complete, please then purge the model 3x times to verify it reached ā€œ0ā€ (these items, if needed at a later date can always be added back in but where they are not in use, its best to remove to enable optimized cleanup and communication within the model).  Once complete, save again, close the model and revit, restart and test again.  Does the same issue occur?  Please keep us posted in the community and let us know if there are any questions.  Thank you and we look forward to your reply.

Thanks for your responses.

I checked the phasing, and that is all good. The gbXML export works just fine, and I am able to import into other programs successfully. The problem is only the preview of the gbXML.

I will try what you suggested in cleaning up the model. (FYI, the link you added in your post is dead)

Thanks, all!

My apologies, it looks like it got clipped in pasting it in.  Please try this one, <copy the entire link and paste into web browser>

checked phasing, audited and purged per the link's instructions. no luck.

when I open the export to gbXML window the status bar says "generating view for Analytical Model Preview" , so it must be something wrong with that process.

This isn't affecting my workflow, just annoying.

Hi @devonpowell

Hope you are well!

This might be an unique case, but here is a couple of additional troubleshooting pointers which you might want to go through relating to gbXML exports using Space Volumes :

  • Is the project itself quite large? e.g. - Hundreds or Thousands of Spaces? If so, it might take a while for the preview to generate, think of it as a Website which is being loaded/buffered, you'll only see the content once the page is loaded. IF the page is large and content heavy, you'll wait longer.
  • Does the same thing happen when trying the Export to gbXML and when your trying to run Heating and Cooling Loads? Preview missing in both scenarios?
  • Right-Click in the blank preview area then select "Zoom to Fit", you might even need to Zoom in even further. The reason being that you might have a floating instance of some sort in your model or which might be in the linked model with coordinates being far away from your working model and spaces.
  • In the sample below, I have buildings and spaces, but included a floating element far away from my actual project...

I hope this helps! Smiley Happy

Hey Rudi, Thanks for the suggestions! I did some more troubleshooting, no luck.

  • The project is pretty large, 800 or so spaces. But it had worked before. The preview does take a while to load, but once it is finished I can see the architectural link (non-room bounding) but not any of the walls or windows I have modeled. It's almost like a visibility graphics thing for the analytical view.
  • I clicked the Heating and Cooling loads and it took a bit to load, but once loaded, same thing as export to gbXML.
  • Tried zoom to fit, and zoom in and out. I can see the arch link, which is the same spot as my model content.

Thanks again for the suggestions. In general I haven't had great luck with the gbXML preview (hide/isolate, and highlight) working reliably.

We created a separate workset for modeling all of the geometry, spaces, and zones but unchecked "visible in all views" in the settings dialogue box for "Worksets". I was having the same problem you described, but once I turned "visible in all views" back on, all of the spaces appeared in the gbXML preview box.

Hope this helps!
