Filtering Selection in a template

Is there a way to filter a selection in a template.  We do many projects where we are designing the piping, plumbing and sheet metal in the same Revit model.  We set up separate working models for each of us to work on with the other disciplines in halftone and dashed.  Is there a way to make it so when I make a selection window in a drawing with the duct template, there is a filter that makes it so it doesnt select any of the piping or plumbing?  I would like to have that in the template for each discipline that filters out the other disciplines when selecting items in that view.  We still want to see the other disciplines in the view, just not be able to select them.

There is no tool for automatically filter out elements from a selection.

Why not use the filter tool? This will allow to filter out other categories

What do you mean with "separate working models"? Do you mean working sets? Or do you mean separate projects that you link in?

Because this might be another solution. Have each discipline create its own project and then link them in when needed. Then you can use the function "Select Links" to prevent selecting links.

Other possible solution will be to use multiple views on your screen. You use one for viewing and other view for working/selecting elements.

Another solution would be to write a small add-in that would have the required functionality.

I tried getting our department to link in the separate disciplines awhile ago for this reason. Our department head is against that. We already have different worksets for each discipline. We have separate working drawings (views) for each discipline and filters set up so that the disciplines you are not working with are half-tone and dashed. What I wanted was a functionality where when you are working on a view, such as duct, you were not able to select the piping or the plumbing that were still on in that view. We want the other disciplines to remain visible so we are aware of them and we can avoid collision. It appears that I will have to look for an add-in.

Hi Smurck,

It not a best practice to have different disciplines in one single file. If you have separate files, you can link them to each other.

Once the file is linked, use windows selection instead of windows cross selection so that elements in linked file will not be selected.

Hope you find it useful.

Actually, separating models by trade is not a best practice. It is recommended to keep them in the same model. There are a number of advantages including making coordination easier.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Wouldn't this make model size huge and effect performance in a negative way?  I'm curious as to the advantages, if you have a moment I'd love to get your take on it.
