Good day,
How can I add a property to a family and let it display within the properties palette. I would like it to be a "text" input in order for users to provide the input.
Thank you.

You can add a parameter in the Revit project (or template) that applies to all elements in specified categories by going to the Manage Tab, Settings Panel, Project Parameters and add a parameter defined as you need it.
I did a quick video on the process: http://screencast.com/t/Exu19usS
You also can put a parameter to the family itself. You have to open the family in the family editor and add the parameter there.
It would be advised to get familiar with family creation. A book (e.g mastering series, books by Paul F. Aubin) or video courses (e.g. Lynda.com Infiniteskills.com) can help with this.
Another starting point might be THIS article on the Autodesk knowledge website.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.
Thank you. I added a shared parameter to the family and when I loaded it into the project the parameter showed up in the properties palette.
Thank you for the information and advise on books and webpages this will contribute tremendously to my knowledge and a good reference point is always welcome.
