Creating Family problem

Hello Everyone! 

I'm very new to creating families. I have a basic frame, where I would like to be able to control it's size with the arrows, attached to it. As soon as I grab any of the arrows, I get an error massage: "Constrains are not satified. "

 

I'm not sure about the common practice of making shapes.

 

I created reference planes for all of the surfaces of my frame, then locked the sides to the reference planes, and then I have dimensions attached to the Reference planes. 

 

How to do this correctly?

Hi @Anonymous

 

I revised your family so that you would be able to use your Drag Vertexes in a Project to adjust your Frame/s. I attached a project file which has 2x Frame Families in it. The one is the family which you built as a duct fitting (cap) and the other one works pretty much exactly the same, but it falls under the "Generic Models" Family Category. 

 

The main thing which you needed to change was to make sure that all of your family parameters were set to "Instance" opposed to "Type" parameters. Otherwise the Drag Vertexes would not be available in a project and would be controlled globally under your family type settings. (Edit Type)

Lastly, if you want to use your Drag Vertexes while in Family Edit Mode to possibly change the default dimensions, then I would change it from the Family Types Settings. Once and extrusion for example is constraint to Ref. Planes it basically becomes "fixed" until you use it in a project, then you'll be able to use it without unsatisfying the constraints. OR by means of changing values under your Family Type Settings which in Family Edit Mode.
