Creating a new pipe type

How to create a new pipe type in Revit MEP from the specified manufacturer as a family file. Instead of just duplicating an existing pipe type and change the name (manufacturers). (Alternate to BIM manager)

Thanks in advance

Create a new segment type in mechanical settings (shortcut MS), this will define the material and the inside, outside and nominal pipe diameters.

Then load the required fittings famiilies and set up the routing preferences.

Thanks for the response.

If we add a pipe family type(from a Manufacturer), then I think the routing preferences are automatically set. (by adding BIM manager tool)

Ah, I didn't realise you had the pipe type supplied by the manufacturer in Revit format, I thought you wanted to create it from scratch based on their data sheets.

If they've given you a Revit file, (usually a .rvt [edited] file which contains the pipe segments and families) then you can either:-

  1. open their file and open your file, then whilst in your file use Transfer Project Standards and untick everything except pipe types or
  2. select pipe and fittings in their .rvt [edited] file, copy to clipboard, paste to a blank part of your file, escape, reselect then delete.

They should though usually provide instructions on how to insert their content into your file.

Okay, thanks for the response, I will try these options.

Sorry, I said .rfa file but I meant .rvt file - I'll edit my earlier comment.

What has the manufacturer provided?

One .rvt with all the families in it or individual .rfa files for each fitting family?

No, the manuacturer hasn't provided anything. I just have to create everything from scratch.

Earlier in the post (part 3) you said "If we add a pipe family type(from a Manufacturer), then I think the routing preferences are automatically set" which is what made me think that the manufacturer had provided you with content.

If that's not the case then you need to go back to my first answer (part 2):

"Create a new segment type in mechanical settings (shortcut MS), this will define the material and the inside, outside and nominal pipe diameters.

Then load the required fittings famiilies and set up the routing preferences."

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to import a pipe family type, so that the routing preferences are automatically set.

Thanks in advance

Yes, but not if its a new pipe that you don't have families for.

If you have a .rvt or .rte file which already has the pipe type in it then go back to part 4 of this post:

"If they've given you a Revit file, (usually a .rvt [edited] file which contains the pipe segments and families) then you can either:-

  1. open their file and open your file, then whilst in your file use Transfer Project Standards and untick everything except pipe types or
  2. select pipe and fittings in their .rvt [edited] file, copy to clipboard, paste to a blank part of your file, escape, reselect then delete."

Why don't you provide more details of what pipe type it is that you are trying to create and what, if any, content you have available otherwise I think we'll keep going round in circles and not solve your issue.

I have to start a new project(in Plumbing). For this I have to create a new pipe type(for e.g. Geberit). So, is there a way to create a new pipe type with this manufacturer, so all the available pipe dimensions, fittings and routing preferences are automatically set(other than doing it manually using mechanical settings), just by inserting a family file.

Geberit have Revit content for download. They usually supply one file containing all of the pipe, fittings and routing preferences for a particular pipe in their product range e.g. press-fit stainless, press-fit carbon etc. Download the one you need and use the method in my last answer at part 10.
