Changing pipe fitting Ref. Level/floor plan plane?

I am using the Revit p-trap family (attached) that I brought into my model and I'm trying to change how it shows up on my floor plans (in single line). We have a symbol we usually use and I want to draw that to show on what is the "left" plane in the model. Top is actually a side view of the p-trap. The only current floor plan is this side view of the p-trap, not a top view.

My issue is that I cannot add a new plane to make a new ref level, I can't delete any of the existing views, I basically have no way of changing anything in order to add a symbol in such a way that it shows up on my floor plans.

Is there any way to do this???

Thanks in advance.

I find that the easiest way to use some of these trap families is to nest them into the appliance family, set as shared. You could then put your symbol in the appliance family rather than the trap family?

Alternatively you could create your symbol in the trap family using model lines.

Thanks @iainsavage ,

Creating my symbol using model lines in the family is what I was trying to do with no luck. I can't make a new work plane and I think all of my line options are greyed out as well. Seems like I can't do anything in the file whatsoever.

If you don't have a solution to those issues, can you please explain what you mean by nesting it inside the appliance family?

Maybe I'm just not familiar enough with the families but I really wish the symbol side of things was much more clearly identified and modified...

In your family I was able to create a new reference plane. Top left image below. I didn't use it for anything though.

I was also able to use model lines to create a 2D symbol in the left view. I set its visibility to medium and coarse.

When inserted into a project the 3D geometry appears in fine detail. The symbol appears in medium detail.

Nesting means incorporating the family into another family e.g a sink. You then need to add parameters in the sink family to match any parameters in the trap family e.g. connection diameter and then map them to associate the parameter in the sink family with the parameter in the trap family. I would usually move the waste connection in the sink family onto the trap outlet rather than the sink outlet.

In the family category and parameters dialogue in the trap family there is a tick box for "shared". When you tick this, the trap family will, in your project, be part of the sink but can still be separately identified, scheduled, counted etc. as a trap.

I find this easier than putting traps on every individual appliance in the project - nest the trap into a sink family and every time that you place a sink the trap is automatically brought in as well. Also a good method for valve sets on radiators etc.

Thanks @iainsavage.

For some reason model lines/reference planes were greyed out yesterday so I couldn't use them, but that's not the case today and I was able to draw my symbol with model lines as you've shown.

Thanks for the extra information as well, I will try to incorporate that.

I’m glad that this helped you.

Regarding the greyed out lines/planes option, were you maybe viewing it in a 3D view oriented to the left view rather than using the left elevation?

I thought I was looking both in the views as well as 3D and checking, but maybe I was only checking in 3D. Not too sure, but it's working for me now.
