Cannot Open IFC File... Not Responding

I received and IFC file from structural and I cannot seem to open it.  I have assigned a template for IFCs in "IFC Options" but with no luck.  I tried linking the IFC as well and it did not work.  When I try to open the IFC it slowly creeps up to about 80% loaded and then the progress bar disappears and I have intermittent waves of Revit "not responding."  I am then stuck in this not responding limbo and nothing ever comes of it.  Any ideas?  I am working in Revit 2016. I am unsure what Revit the IFC was made in but I did not think that mattered when it comes to IFCs.  I thought an IFC file was the only way to achieve backward compatibility with Revit.

How big is the IFC file?

Opening an IFC file takes much longer than a Revit model with the same size. Give your computer several hours to open the file.

Opening the file can take hours. Give it a try.

You can try to use Solibri IFC optimizer, it reduces the file size, then opening the file becomes faster.

Depending on your hardware it may take a long time, once I had a file that after opening became 600MB revit file, took around 3 hours to open.
