Cable Tray Baskets

Dear collegues,

I am starting to use cable trays now a lot more, and have downloaded the complete range of fittings etc, and positioning/routing is not a problem.

My question is though - how do i get them to look like a basket design? regardless of what i do, they are still hot dip galvanised as the material.

I have assigned material to the Object Style, but i simply cant create a basket form - course, medium, fine or rendered - no difference.

i am obviously missing something basic here. hope someone can help.

thanks

Hello,

AFAIK it is not possible to change the cable tray geometry, as they are system families.

We can't change the system family geometry. Basket cable tray family is not available in revit library. You can use the graphics filter and pattern option for representation purpose.

Please select "Accept solution" if the information was helpful (This allows other users with the same issues to find it higher in search results), or reply back if you need more help!

Hi,

Fabrication MEP has basket tray. You can load and modify them as you need it. Let me know if this is what you are looking for and I can walk you through how to load and modify the basket tray.

I don't think you missed anything... I don't believe you can change the appearance of this system family.

Hi s.borello,

That was correct, I can't change the appearance but can modify some parameters that was greyed out. Hope this helps.

Anytime I try to load any fabrication parts, I get an error message:

Some items in service "Electrical: Wireway" were not loaded. You should validate the configuration in an Autodesk Fabrication product.

Any idea why?  Is there  a separate program I'm supposed to use besides revit?

Hi stever66,

The video was to start loading the out of the box MEP Fabrication for basket/wireway. Let me know if this what you are seeing in your MEP settings.

Would you screenshots the settings before you see the error message? What version of Revit are you using?

Note: There is newer version of MEP fabrication - separate discussion.

I can load the parts, but the services never load without an error message, and they are always greyed out.

About half the parts don't work either.  If I try to place them, I get an error saying there is an invalid dimension, and that I need to edit the part.  Doesn't seem to matter what I put in for the dimensions, they never work.

Hi stever66,

What version of Revit are you using? Do you have Revit 2019 or 2020 version? Would you try other version of revit? Let me know if they have the same error?

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Exact same problem in Revit 2019 and even 2018.  I've attached the error message.

Hi stever66,

There are 2 options on my card. See list below.  Do you have options to download other software? Installing Fabrication CAD MEP also helps me to update some values on this basket tray. If this doesn't work, we need to address this to Autodesk. 😉

  • Try to download Fabrication CAD MEP.
  • Last reinstall your Revit 2019.

You can't change the angle of that fitting as it is fixed at 90 degrees, this is a specific manufacturers part so this makes sense.

If you want to create new content or alter the library of Items you need to do this via Fabrication cad mep, which totally sucks as it is a bitch to use if you are used to Revit.

FYI you will need to have the correct version of AutoCAD installed to be able to download and install the Fabrication cad mep plug-in from your Autodesk account. Don't spend an hour looking for it when it is not there like i did...

Hi @ktibleS47S8,

I followed your video to load the MEP fabrication wire basket tray and was successful but it won't allow me to edit the bend radius or length of the sections. How were you able to edit these part parameters that are greyed out?

You can't with OOTB RVT families.

This is why i made reference to the fabrication cad mep library. The OEM ITM content in fab cad mep is locked so that the length cannot be changed, for what reason i have no idea why as it makes no sense whatsoever. You have to take a copy of the library and unlock each ITM file, quite a pain in the ass!

I haven't used the revit ITMs for years so i'm not sure if they have been unlocked in the interim period or not.

Hello,

The cable tray families are set in the electrical template.

Hi,

I resolved this problem using filters with a custom pattern and transparency. It's not perfect for the rendering for example but at least I keep my cable tray in the system category (allows schedule, etc).

You can visit my linkedin page for the details :
