Point Cloud Links to IFC

I have a file with several rcp point cloud files linked.  I have exported the file to IFC, but when I open it in a previous version of Revit, it is not visible.

Can point cloud links be exported to IFC?

Hi, AndriaLynch,

I'm Judy, a Revit specialist, and I'll be happy to try to help you with your question. Can you provide some additional details so I can better understand your workflow?

1. You have described a file with several rcp files linked. Is the file with the links a Revit file, or is it in some other format? If it's Revit, which version?

2. Have you created any objects in Revit, or are you trying to use Revit to convert point clouds to an IFC file directly? What is it you are hoping to end up with when you have exported the point clouds to IFC?

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,

Judy Staicer

Hi Judy,

can you help me with the similar case, which has currently occurred in my project.

I have a revit file created from RCP, which was created by merging various RCS files recieved from the point cloud scanner company.

As we are into Open-BIM project, so the conversion of the same file as IFC is quite necessary in order to achieve a better coordination between the two trades.

It is a plumbing central station from our exisiting site, which we need to connect to our on-going phase of the project.

Your help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, @naveed.zargar,

Thanks for your post and for joining the Autodesk community!

Revit is not able to convert point clouds to IFC, as point clouds are not Revit data. My best suggestion would be to research point cloud to IFC conversion online to see if it's possible, and perhaps to also discuss your needs with the scanning company.

Another possible workflow might be to create a new workset for "existing" piping and then add Revit piping using the point cloud as a reference. Perhaps adding just enough "existing" Revit piping to allow you to make the connections to the new piping in your model would be useful (rather than trying to recreate the entire existing piping in Revit).

I hope this is helpful!

Best regards,
