Hello C4R Team.
We know several companies that want to use C4R to save problems and money on a network server setup. Only its not possible for them to force external partners to use C4R or even Revit. It seems not possible to link IFC's and non-C4R Revit models from the BIM 360 Team Cloud to Revit through C4R. Also when C4R is activated, its not possible to link local IFC files anymore [1].
This makes it a no-go for almost all of them. To maintain the workaround alone would make it a full time job and needs a separate network server on the side they want to save on. The easiest way to resolve this (I think) is an option to push the file from BIM 360 Team to the C4R cloud environment. Or when someone wants to link a file through C4R, it looks at the BIM 360 Team project. When the model is selected it creates a copy on the C4R cloud servers as a '(Linked) Cloud Revit Model' and IFC's are converted to the same file with the used IFC options in Revit.
I cannot find if this is something that is in development or that this issue is stated at all. Can this be added to C4R?

Hi @Anonymous,
You might find this workflow useful:
Using Autodesk Desktop Connector to link a Non-Revit file into a C4R Project
Please, don´t forget to mark this as a solution if you do - with that you might help other users with the same challenges as well.
Best regards,
To all,
The Autodesk Desktop Connector works fine for e.g. DWG files. When trying to link the IFC, Revit generates the files (.log .ifc.rvt) as expected, but will not load the model into the project.
So if Revit does not do the work for us, I did the following:
Opened the .ifc.rvt directly from the BIM 360 Team desktop connector, and initiated a Revit Cloud Model. Re-opened my project and linked the newly Revit Cloud Model. Hence Revit considers an "IFC Link" as a translation of element generated in the Revit model, updating the IFC file with a new one has no influence anymore on the Cloud Model linked into the project.
Bottom line:
This only works from Revit 2018.2 and up.
Standard Autodesk does not provide a solid solution (yet), but with some extra work "IFC file" can be loaded into a C4R project.
Kind regards,
Thierry
Hi Thierry,
Thanks for the update. IFC links are indeed not supported yet - unfortunately this is actually a pretty complicated problem, but we're working to figure out a solution.
Thanks,
Sasha
Hi Sasha,
Just following up on the below - has any further progress been made by Autodesk to enable linking of IFC models into C4R/BIM360 cloudshared models?
We still have projects working in Revit 2017 with a number of external parties providing IFC files, so would benefit immensely from this functionality.
Regards,
Christian
Hi Sasha,
Any updates on solving this problem? We have found a workaround for linking IFC's in to BIM 360, but it is definitely not ideal.
I am happy to announce that the ability to link an IFC via Desktop Connector was added in the Revit 2019.1 release.
Thanks,
Sasha
It don't work with Revit 2019.2
What to do?
